The Kenwood Chef grating/slicing attachment is around £55.It also does big blocks of cheese in no time. I actually bought it to grate carrots as I love carrot cake but get armache from grating so much by hand.

But then I'd have to buy a kenwood chef AND find a cupboard to put it in.Science adjusts its views based on what's observed.

Mine's not in a cupboard. I just cover it with a sheepy cover.

I have a Kitchenaid (only because of Amazon's Black Friday sale) but for years I was making cakes that didn't require a lot of air incorporated (i.e. not sponges) in the food processor or by hand. Sponges were made with a value hand mixer. That was adequate for 99% of what I wanted to make, the other 1% didn't get made.
Could I live without it again? Sure.0 -
I always made lovely cakes with my hand blender. Since buying an ancient Kenwood Chef (using tips on this website) I use that; but the benefit is more that a stand mixer is much more convenient than a hand blender.Make £2023 in 2023: (all decluttering), current total £2860 me, £330 for friends & family, £468 charity donations.0

I personally find that cakes done in my kenwood food processor aren't very good, it's as though there's not very much air in the mixture so the cakes aren't light and fluffy so I always use a hand mixer for cakes. The processor is great for pastry or biscuits and I also use it for chopping food and grating large amounts of carrots or cheese.Dum Spiro Spero0

Do you need one? No, I'd say not. You can do most things either with a bowl and a wooden spoon or with your hand mixer. Having said that a Kitchen Aid is a thing of beauty and something to be lusted over!
I went for the compromise of a Kenwood Chef, the unit itself was cheaper and all of the attachments were cheaper. I'm not sure if there is any functional difference between the two models - I think the Chef is noiser in use because of the drive system it uses but I just couldn't justify the difference in cost as I knew that I wanted to buy lots of extras (food slicer attachment, mincer etc.)
My Kenwood lives in a cupboard whilst I'm still able to lift it in and out - at the point I can't then I'll be very tempted by one of those sheepy covers!Piglet

I now need a sheepy dust cover for my Kenwood Chef instantly.....!!
If anyone is looking for a Chef but can't afford one, btw, Ebay can usually provide a 901 or 701 (the two classic older models) with basic whisks for around £50, plus attachments are also availible second-hand. I inherited my 901 from an old auntie but most of my attachments came from ebay. I agree, the high speed grater is a miraculous gizmo for grating kilos of whoopsied cheese!Val.0 -
I blitzed a large pile of bendy carrots through the grater today and made lovely soup - it's great!Piglet

Ok... my guilty secret. I have an Artisan in a lovely blue colour. It was a present from my Kid's Dad. However, I have never used it though and it i still in the box. I have a food processor which I use almost daily and a hand held mixer which I also use to make cakes etc. Im almost frightened of using it - I think. I think I will make it my resolution to get it out of it's box. So probably you dont need one but you can still have one if you would like to xI must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0
