I have been lucky enough to received a Kindle and it is brilliant. I had Kindle on my PC and had amassed over 400 free titles! Once I had registered my Kindle all the books were automatically transfered to it. My only gripe is that if you click 'Buy it now with 1-click' by mistake then tough you have bought the book! I managed to click this instead of the 'Send sample now' and ended up with a book that I would not have bought. Apart from that I love it! :)

You have a period that you can cancel your order to cover this circumstance. This info is taken from the Amazon site:

    Cancelling Accidental Purchases

You have the option to cancel a purchase from your Kindle immediately after it was completed in case you change your mind or make a mistake. After you click "Buy" you will see a thank you page that gives you the option to either return to the store or cancel the order. Use the select wheel to cancel the order, if desired. If the option to cancel the order is no longer available, you can also contact Amazon Customer Service via e-mail or phone by clicking one of the Contact Us buttons on any Kindle Support Help page on Amazon.com. After a purchase is cancelled, the item is removed from your Kindle and a refund will be issued to the payment method used for the original purchase.

They have very good customer service so contact them and ask for a refund explaining you recently got it.

I have both iPad and kindle and for me its almost impossible to read on an iPad using Kindle app or other wise.

The iPad screen is far too bright to read comfortably and its major downfall is that it is simply too heavy to hold comfortably for any length of time. I've spent 12 months trying to read successfully on iPad and really do hate it. As a gaming/surfing device it's perfect for me, but as a book reader it fails I feel.

Kindle doesn't strain my eyes and is light enough to curl up on the sofa with and hold in one hand. I much prefer it.

I've downloaded Calibre so as to get Gutenburg and local library free books. Not used it yet. Looks complicated.

It works, but it's certainly not the easiest and best laid-out piece of software. Persevere and you'll get used to it - at least it's free. :)
  • Hi, in reply to posts above regarding ordering a book you do not want....I did this a couple of nights ago and did not realise until hubby checked e mails before going to bed! However, we managed to return it/got refund within minutes so all is not lost if you do it within 24 hours I think...please read the return instructions on kindle pages.....I was so intent on down loading lots of free books but had requested a sample of the book bought and obviously pressed wrong button....£6.73 is not a bargain, much as I want the book!1

As a means of getting stuff onto the Kindle it's not really that complicated at all.

Once you've installed Calibre you just need to tell it whereabouts on your computer the ebooks are stored (easier if they're all nice and tidy in a separate folder called "ebooks" or something similar) Then once it's found them all it will display them in a window in order (I think default order is by author but you can change this by clicking at the top of any of the columns of information.)

All you have to do now is select which books you want to transfer to the Kindle - either one at a time or multilple books by holding "control" or "shift" keys (standard windows function). Once you are happy click the "add to device" (think that's what it's called) button at the top centre on the window and they will all be zapped across.

It is worth noting that the "add to device button" is only visible when there is a Kindle plugged in... had me confused once when I was showing someone!

  • Had a complete shock when my daughter (who's only just started working part time) bought me a kindle for Christmas - bless her little heart. I'm absolutely addicted to the damn thing already, and I'm a real tactile book lover. Who'd have thought it???
