Oh no just measured and all 3 sizes would come out far to big, can anyone tell me any hint and tips for sewing on linen,
it says recommended to be stitched over 1 on 25 count Dublin linen, using one strand of floss or 2 depending on your converge preference

You may also use the tent stitch or full crosses depending on you preference

None of it makes sense to me lol

Any ideas where I can get a little piece of linen to practice?

Is linen the same as evenweave ?

Sorry for all the questions again!
    Thanks

    when did the website change?
Just recently, the last week or so.

You could try a patch with 1 strand of floss, a patch with two, in both crossstitch and tent stitch to see which you like better.

    Tent stitch: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tent_stitch

iirc it's 'evenweave linen', because it's more uniform/even than regular cloth, I'm not 100% sure though! If you buy something that is 25 count Dublin you will get the right thing though (as long as you get the right colour!).

Just to give you an idea - imagine stitching over one hole on evenweave....it isn't going to be easy!! I tried it for miniature stitching last year.

Is the 18ct too big as well?

I would be looking for a different wall to put it on before choosing to stitch something that time consuming on linen!

i would join in the linen/ evenweave debate but the thought fills me with dread so i shall just curl back up here.

I managed about 600 stitches in 3 and a half hours yesterday......... is that good or bad (can't remember what the discussion was). it seems pretty rubbish to me (i woulda liked to have done double that) but it's made a bit bigger dent in Troutbeck. Aiming for another 3-4hours tonight then will try and do a new progress pic.

I think there's around 4500 stitches left to do.

    have a good day harley.
loves how my "I've been censored" signature has been censored. LOL. Happy Christmas. :xmastree:
  • defiantly to big would be bigger than the wall space even before it was framed:(. Might have a look around and see which other counts or aida I can find but that might send me mad sewing on something as small as 25 ct. Really don't know what to do, I could try and find a smaller lady dressed in red! will maybe have a look later.
    Thanks for everyone's help

    Hi Maria

I would suggest evenweave rather than linen for a spectacular design like this where the stitching appears to cover the whole of the fabric design area. Linen has "slubs" in it which can produce little bumps in the stitching if you are covering the whole of the fabric; usually linen is used where some of the fabric will be on show. Evenweave doesn't have any slubs BUT when you are stitching over 1 you have to be careful with tension - this shouldn't be a problem when working on a frame like the one Louise has recommended. Sewandso sell 25 count Lugana which would be ideal. Or 20 count Bellana would be easier as the holes are more obvious. If you PM me with your address I can send you a piece of 20 count to try - it's what I am using for my Angel Stocking. Hope this isn't putting you off. I personally love stitching on linen and evenweave and rarely use anything else.
Tent stitch is half cross stitch - faster obviously but it has a tendency to distort the fabric on larger pieces of work = this can be remedied by a good framer.
Oh and I personally would leave more of a margin for framing on a piece like this so that when ou have finished and gettting it framed you aren't restricted by lack of "spare" fabric. Just my twopence worth - feel free to ignore :D

Hello all, I am posting here in the hope it gives me some encouragement to finish all my cross stitch kits!

I used to do a lot of cross stitch, but for the last 3 years or so due to various reasons I haven't really done any.
This week I've finally got round to unpacking all my sewing stuff (I moved here 8 months ago, still got boxes to unpack, lol!), and have started doing cross stitch again.

Current UFOs (all started years ago!):
    1. 13x13cm zinnias (http://www.sewandso.co.uk/Products/Zinnias__DIM-7213.aspx - yes I know not actually cross stitch this one but close enough!)
    2. Tiny 3D old-fashioned pub (http://www.3dcrossstitch.co.uk/store.cfm?Do=Detail&ProductCode=KMICASTLE&Buy=True)
    3. A bookmark that just needs the backing sewn/fixed on
    4. About 4 of these snowmen http://www.sewandso.co.uk/ran1466-0.html that appear to be almost finished, just not got the hats/toys fixed on. Got about 8-10 more of the snowmen which are haven't been started - I'm going to finish them all by Christmas, 11 months should be long enough.
    5. I've also got what looks like 3 larger kits which I've started but which were all mixed up in a carrier bag - I think I'll leave these for now, until I can face sorting them all out!

    Wish me luck!
Hi and welcome. I love your UFOs. If you post a piccie of the current work done on them and then update us with your progress you will get lots of encouragement and plenty of sympathy if your progress is stalled

The snowmen will be wonderful at Christmas and setting a target of completing one every other month should be realistic.

I love the pub - I have 2 of these 3D cottages and I use them to store packets of needles - one for machine needles and one for hand needles and pins so they are useful as well as attractive.

    Good luck!
