Soulie's pictures have just reminded me to ask this :
I've seen lots of people's pictures where they take the "left over" thread from the back of the fabric through to the front (I'm presuming so that they can start up again with that colour on the next page of the chart?).
How do you know which colour thread is which? Especially with similar shades?
I always finish the thread off and start with a new piece, but that obviously uses more (although I've never run out of pre cut threads supplied with kits, so maybe not that much more!).
Be interested to hear the various views.
I have wondered that as well, I always stitch in and cut my leftover thread. I imagine it would get confusing and I would be constantly double checking my colours which would slow me down. And don't the threads get caught/tangled at the front?
As you can see, I'm also interested
Maria - they look greatHow do you pan to finish them off - frame colours and the like?

soulie that looks beautiful.
re the threads on titanic im working onto the next page of the chart to use the leftover thread up so i get a more staggered line on my edges than your neat ones. i have got one long thread but thats a single line of cross stitches so it would go all the way along and i was worried id miscount and place it wrongSPC~12 ot 124

It's really easy, you just 'park' it up in the next area you plan to work on, but you will never forget which thread is which as you park it in the 'square' which it is needed. This doesn't really make sence does it? lol
Example:
Say this is your chart, an area of 5x5:
/ / / / /
/ / / ? /
/ / / / /
/ / / / /
/ / / / /
Now, there is just one ? symbol, so say I maybe stitch the ? symbol first then I would do the / now say the 5x5 square underneath looked like this:
? ? ? / /
? ? / / ?
/ / ? ? ?
? ? ? ? ?
? ? ? / /
So after I have stitched the lonely ? in the first 5x5 I would park up the rest of the thread in the first square underneath where the first ? symbol is shown (in red), but I would then go back to the first set of 5x5 and stitch the / symbol before I would stitch the rest of the ? symbol.
Some people like to work a 10x10 section, and park up thread ready for the next section, if there is enough thread, and more of that symbol, and others like to work one colour at a time, it's all down to personal preference.
I vary which method I do it, depending on the chart.
If it looks like:
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? / / ? ? ? ? ? ?
Then I would work from left to right as normal, and omit the 10x10 rule I usually work by.
But if it looks like this:
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? L L L L L L L L L
L L L L L L L L M M M M O O O ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
M M M M M M O O O O O O ? ? ? ? ? ? L L L L L
L L L L M M O O O O O O O O O O ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
L L M M M M M M M M O O O O O ? P P P P P P
Then I would work 10x10 blocks and park up!
Is this what you were asking? And if so does this make sence? :rotfl:

Thanks for the comments re pictures, I cant decide weather or not to frame a good marriage and put it on the front room window sill or make it in a cushion, and I'm going to put the stitching one in a framed on my bookshelf, I have no ideas on colours though13 in 2013 challenge 9/130

Soulie - that explanation makes sense to me as well.
Maria - love both of them. I like the idea of the Good Marriage being framed but that's only because of the shape of it. You've done them both really quickly. What's the next project then?
I think I must be a bit of an oddity in that I try to finish all of stitches in one colour in a given area before I do another. I don't do the 5x5 or 10x10 rule, neither do I try to finish a sheet of A4 before moving to the next I tend to jump around.

That makes perfect sense, Soulie! It just hadn't occurred to me that the thread came up at the point where you'd need it next...I think I thought it just came up at a random spot!
And, I guess it avoids the thread "draping" across the back of the fabric because you'll oversew it while you're filling in the rest of the 5x5 or 10x10.
That makes so much sense, I might start doing it :T0 -
explanation makes perfect sense to me Soulie.
have a good (stitchy) weekend allSPC~12 ot 124
