Hmmm... still have to say that the OP still has not clarified the original point they made of:

"When I turned up at nearly midnight the receptionist started having an argument with me and wouldn't let me sign in"

Has clarified what happened after the argument but not what the actual argument was originally about...

Normal occurance would be you walk into the hotel, go to the reception and say "Evenin', I need to check in, I have a reservation under the name of ....." I would be exceptionally surprised if their response was "no, you look like a suicide bomber" (no matter how bad they are at customer service)

However, if the OP doesnt want to clarify the initial circumstances then the normal course of action would be to write to the management at the hotel or at head office if it is part of a chain.

Sorry to hear of your troubles Handsome Homer :(

I know it doesn't excuse what happened to you at all, but thought you might want to know you're far from the only unhappy person regarding this hotel:

Let us know how you get on, I think its disgusting in this day and age that staff get away with treating customers like this. All companies these days realise the importance of customer service and take a serious view on it. Id definatly make a complaint using the guys name as Im sure it will still get looked into even if nothing is done. Eventually they will realise they have a problem and will have to do something about this guy. Id also mention the manager on duty's name as he was in charge of the employee at the time.

    How awful!
Most hotels do not mind what time you check in and if they accepted guest after you arrived then what was the problem?

Complain to both the manager and the chain, ask if there is cctv footage - there often is over reception for security purposes. Complaints should be dealt with within two weeks...also mention how you shall be recomended to your company that this hotel no longer be used for business.

here is a lovely review of that place...;)
This 'hotel' is absolutely disgusting. We forfeited the money we paid for it and never slept a night it was so bad. We booked other accomodation close-by.
I booked this place for two nights (14th & 15th Dec 2006) over the web to have a few days to relax with my wife in London. We arrived just after 8:00PM to the very elegant exterior and extremely modern lobby only to be shocked beyond belief once we went beyond that. I just don't know where to start to describe it, but out of respect to prospective clients I feel obligated to.
Once you hit the bottom of the stairs, you meet the filthy old carpet which persists along all the narrow dingy hallways. All the doors to the rooms are old scraped cheap hollow office-type doors with outdoor keys to each.
Now open the door. (Room 302) My first thoughts were "Maybe I'm not really seeing this" as I looked at what looked to me like a tiny bedsit that hadn't been maintained in decades. The 'furniture' was not only cheap but falling apart. The bed was a metal frame with a thin matress and the sound of the springs underneath was just unbearable. There was a horrible old fermica counter with an old fridge underneath. I didn't dare to open the fridge or any of the presses for fear of what I might see. The curtains were falling off the curtain pole and wouldn't block out the light. We were told that we were lucky to be getting a shower. (Granted, I knew there were shared facilities) I wouldn't get into this shower in a wetsuit. I admit I didn't pay much for it, but I still was totally misled by their advertising of their 'new concept' in no frills accomodation and the photos they posted.
Needless to say, my protestations with the manager at the desk were in vain (He kept saying "This is a B&B, not a hotel" to which I pointed out the name of the "Belgrave House Hotel" sign hanging outside the door), but I'm just happy to have gotten out of this horrible place and make things up with my wife for such a bad mistake.
I hope I've saved you some heartache.

Me too - that was theft!!

Homer, by all means, complain to the hotel (you could always threaten to sue them for racial discrimination), but to be honest, I don't think much will come of it. Public forums and watchdog are probably the better route because that way their reputation will suffer.

  • Again, thank you.
nej: do you know any legislation i can quote when i ask for the CCTV footage? i think i will put it in the letter, though i have every faith it's been lost...

So sorry to hear of this, HH. You MUST take this further, if only to prevent it happening to someone else.

As for your request for CCTV data, please quote that you are making a Subject Access Request for ALL footage in which you/your image were captured (under the Data Protection Act) and don't forget to enclose the £10 fee for such. Under the DPA, £10 is the maximum that they can charge you for it regardless of how much it costs them to process the image(s). If they do come back and tell you that the data is no longer available (which wouldn't surprise me!) then ask them for a copy of their data retention schedule - you could even go so far as to ask about their policy for destroying data in order to prove that it has indeed been disposed of, and disposed of correctly (after all you wouldn't want it to turn up on youtube or something!).

I hope that this information is of some use to you and please let us know how you get on, should you chose to take this further. I hope that this hasn't made too large a dent in your faith in human nature.

Thanks to irishwench for mentioning tripadvisor. I looked up the hotel we've just booked for a long weekend in London in March, and found some horrid pictures and not-so-good reviews. I've amended the booking to a much nicer one, one that I've been to before and know is nice. I NEVER book anything without checking reviews, so dont know how I didn't in this case. Must have been over excited about a bargain!
