I'm surprised that more sellers don't put a breakdown of their costs in their listing. E.g:

If I saw this, I'd be immediately reassured that postage costs were reasonable. I'd also know, e.g., whether p&p includes travel costs to the P.O. or whatever.

If I saw that I would assume seller has excessive p and p and is trying to justify it to save their account. If p and p is reasonable there is no need at all to justify it.

Some sellers do have a breakdown of the charges usually in amusing coloured typeface asking buyers to 'remember that p and p is not just the cost of a stamp and that they are a full time mum who needs a lift to the PO and if they don't like the charge then they shouldn't bid'

That sort of statement is usually coupled with appalling stars

I'd wonder why they were buying such expensive bubble envelopes.

I got my first low DSR yesterday for P&P charges. Bearing in mind I charge about 2p more than stamp cost and usually wrap in brown paper and parcel tape, I can only assume that this particular buyer objected to the brown paper.

I don't like brown paper - it falls apart when wet. You need a lot of parcel tape to be sure that the item doesn't fall out if it gets wet/ripped. It can also be quite heavy if it's decent guage. You might want to consider plastic mailing bags. (Although I wouldn't mark down DSRs to 1 or 2 stars for it!)

I do use quite a lot of parcel tape. I really ought to buy mailers, I never get round to it and it would save me so much time!

Except that we hear complaints on here about people being marked down, even though their p&p charges were no more than the postage charges.

I receive quite a few items with no postage charge listed on the package, and it's quite hard to know what the real postage would be. Makes it difficult to give stars. Personally I would appreciate a breakdown and a statement of how much the actual postage charge would be. But, given that the response to this has been negative, I think sellers are going to have quite a problem.

I don't think that "p&p being 'reasonable'" by itself is going to be enough, unless buyers are somehow reassured that the charges are reasonable. If the postage is clear on the package, that will help. When it isn't, buyers may be unsure.

Was the postage charge actually charged by your courier clear on the package?
  • "it's quite hard to know what the real postage would be"

In some cases you may never know, I can legitimately post a kilo parcel for the cost of a 250-500g parcel, charge you the kilo weight and pocket the difference. You'd never know and that's the point in all this, who cares? The price is the price and the sellers dilberately over charging on P&P are only doing so to avoid fees which may tell you something about their honestly and the service you can expect should you have a real problem with the purchase and need to rely on the seller to resolve an actual issue.

The quality of the packaging is far more important, buyers nit-picking over £1.30 are pushing private sellers away from eBay, who add diversity and also spend their Paypal money shopping on eBay, and are forcing sellers to free P&P which increases fees, thus increasing the cost of the item. People taking the mick with fee avoidence should not sell anything (i.e smart buyers should avoid them), sellers actually charging over the odds to pocket a few quid per sale will lose sales to the competition and suffer low stars, but the constant focus on this issue isn't positive at all.

I think a lot of this is just the British mentality of enjoying a bloody good moan, as the time spent focusing on it is of far greater waste that the 'over the odd' cost paid for 'expensive' P&P!

I can confirm that I do use these mailers and can recommend them. They have no smokey smell and they are really tough- on the rare occasions I have had to re open a sealed bag (usually because I forgot to put the note in or something else) I've had to destroy the bag to get into it and use a new one.

They are not cheap but they are worth the extra penny or so each. However, I rue the day obviouslythebest told me about them- I am now quite addicted and every time i see a new colour I just have to buy them- despite having a stock of several thousand grey ones already.

I have every colour every size.
