Do you think this is unreasonable P&P?

But working out postage is a guess. eg will it go as a large letter or small packet, is it above or below 250g.

I sent one last week where the postage was £3.12 (?) and Id only charged £2.85 (duh!!!).

Another (RM 2nd) sold on Monday so I upgraded it to first class so it would get there by Xmas.

  • I'm not a business or regular seller so I always weigh the item + packing and check the price on RM before listing.

If I ever undercharge then that's my mistake and learn from it, if I overcharge I will refund the difference - which I did last week when I had to use different packing and the postage was less, the difference was 60p - buyer was grateful for the honesty.

I have often refunded postage when it has come out cheaper than expected and very rarely has anyone thanked me for it,but when I have undercharged nobody ever comments on it
  • lol I didn't start the thread to start an argument.

I'm not overly bothered about £1.30 on top of the postage paid nor am i bothered that it was sent in a bin liner, I've done that myself for larger items however my questions really is, where is the justification of adding £1.30 on? And in this case is it fair?

If that's justifiable then I might as well start doing it myself instead of the 20 or so pence that I add onto the price of the stamp unless additional packing is necessary and pass on the cost.

You are allowed to include reasonable charges for the COSTS associated with postage which include the time taken to do it and towards driving to the post office to post it.
  • sellers simply cannot win. You try to manage customers expectations but you cannot please everybody. Conversely to the OP, the majority of our items cost us £ 35 to send out which is broken down as roughly £ 25 courier and £ 10 for pre made boxes, which I hasten to add we have to purchase 1000 to get at this price. We only charge £ 25 P&P so subsidise this by 10 quid and yet do we get the kudos from customers for this generosity? Do we hell as like, we get marked down on the DSR ratings for being too expensive. I would like to see anybody else send 80kg in two purpose made boxes for under 25 quid on a two day delivery!! To that end we had to lump the postage costs onto the item and offer free P&P whilst putting more money into ebay coffers.

    .

How is it a guess? I weigh my items and it's not difficult to measure a package if you're unsure if it'll go as a large letter. It just makes sense to me to take an extra minute or 2 to check I am charging a fair postage for both me and buyer
    :DPlease, pretty please!:D

I bought a proper solid plastic size gauge and i have digital scales- so no guessing here.

I do still make silly mistakes, quoting European postage under worldwide for instance (cost me quite a bit!) but that is due to me being careless .

Its a guess. eg clothing, a top ONCE PACKAGED will normally fit into a large letter, but depending on how its wrapped, sometimes it wont fit thru the posty sizer. A hoodie mostly ONCE PACKAGED will be under 500g but sometimes is over 500g. Something breakable, ONCE PACKAGED I may have bubble wrap around, or it may be old newspapers.....can double the weight of the item.

But your right in that it is possible to weigh the item before its PACKAGED.

I have bought boxes and plastic mailers in bulk and (sad as I am ) I have written down what each box weighs and also what each plastic mailer weighs. So I choose what box I will be using to pack an item, that plus the item weight tells me what postal band the item will fall into. Bubble wrap also has some weight, but for instance if I have a 300g item and a 100g box even with bubble wrap it will fall into the 500g weight so I quote for that. Non Uk postage is worked out the same, if I suspect package will be near the 500g margin then I will quote overseas for 500g. If however I am only just in the 500g weight in the UK then I will quote fo rnext nearest overseas band, so 300g or 360g (whatever)

As for clothes I rarely sell them, but tend to assume they all go as a packet as soft items rarely fit comfortably through size gauge when packed as they tend to expand.

Thats my point......assume its a packet and charge for a packet, but if when packaged it goes into a large letter.....

Im only an occasional seller and tend to hunt around the garage for packaging whenever I sell anything. Not as organised as you soo.
