So pack your stuff, then weigh it. How hard can it be? Once I've refurbished them, all my phones are boxed with the item number on them.

But your right in that it is possible to weigh the item before its PACKAGED.
Why can't you weigh after it's packaged? or weigh with packaging if you don't want to pack before sold?
    :DPlease, pretty please!:D

should the P&P costs not reflect the cost of postage plus the cost of packing? perhaps a foolish assumption on my part
I think that the majority of people think the same way, but it is incorrect I'm afraid.
    This is what eBay say-

"Remember that sellers may charge for the cost of the actual packaging materials, along with a reasonable dispatch fee to cover the seller's time and direct costs associated with postage."

Which of course doesn't matter at all when a buyer is asked to rate how reasonable the post and packing charges are. Buyers are not reminded that sellers may charge for extras- and any seller who believes they can get away with all the extras is going to have a short selling history.

Fair point! i live a 2-minute walk from a P.O., so personally wouldnt add anything other than the price of actual P&P, but I see how others can justify it now.

Really tho, a walk to the P.O. is good for your health, so sellers should be grateful for the opportunity to improve their health whilst bringing joy to their buyers, so i think this would justify a discount in P&P :rotfl::beer:

I have often refunded postage when it has come out cheaper than expected and very rarely has anyone thanked me for it,but when I have undercharged nobody ever comments on it

Same her vanmann. They don't even reply to my message when I explain why |I've refunded them some money.
  • I think I've only had to do 2 refunds; one the chap replied and thanked for honesty, the other didn't reply but left a detailed feedback. In hindsight I probably could have left them both but I like to rectify my mistakes. If people don't appreciate it I know I did my best.

I see we're still no further forward as to what we think are reasonable addition to the cost of postage for 'time and direct costs associated with postage', I suppose it's never going to be clear cut.

I did receive a reply from the seller, they said the additional cost was because they have to pay VAT plus the cost of the packaging.
  • You are allowed to include reasonable charges for the COSTS associated with postage which include the time taken to do it and towards driving to the post office to post it.
    No, you are not.

Costs such as time, petrol, invoices etc should be added to the price of the item, NOT the P&P charge which is for Actual Postage plus a few pence for packaging.
  • I parcel goods in black bin bags or used carrier bags, its waterproof and much stronger than wrapping in brown paper. if its large and I can't put it in a plastic postage bag. Black bags have to be bought! I have to travel by car to the post office and pay for parking so this is all reflected in the price. Think about how much it costs to post a card 1st class. Is £1.30 really a lot to pay?

i agree £1.30 extra is not bad..i,v paid £4 odd quite a lot of times then find it arrives in a normal white envelope with a first class stamp on. i also bought a vase once and seller charged me £3 post, when it arrived i noticed postage was about £12 and i only bought vase for £5, i did send her the extra though.

I'm surprised that more sellers don't put a breakdown of their costs in their listing. E.g:
Postage for this item is £3.87. This includes £3.07 postage, £0.50 for a padded envelope, and £0.30 for bubblewrap and tape.

If I saw this, I'd be immediately reassured that postage costs were reasonable. I'd also know, e.g., whether p&p includes travel costs to the P.O. or whatever.
