Looking at the Britax Evolva and Jane Indy for my 5 year old and 7 1/2 year old.

Interesting to note that while doing a web search for the Jane I came across a US site which said it should be used as a full seat and not a booster-bottom bit until the child reachs 153cm! In that case I will have to buy 1 for me too!

Just watched the youtube video- tears still rolling- will be driving 20 miles to Mothercare world to check out the car seats, and explain to my 7 year old why he will be sitting in a baby seat- even if it means he has to watch the video.

Don't forget though that the rules in the USA are totally different to the UK as are the safety standards and you should only use any car seat purchased in the UK using the UK instructions

    Hi

Also I wondered if anyone could suggest the best car for my mum to get for my 3 yr old DD? My mum has a Mercedes A Class and the seats are really striaght up at back - no idea what would fit.
Thank you in advance for any help
    Claire

I know the A class is a funny car to get seats to fit into , maybe worth paying a visit to the local dealership and see what seat they recommend , ask who makes the seat and then locate it on the net for a lot cheaper than they will be asking .

Well after all my headaches with car seats, I went to Mothercare armed with 'which seat was best' The lady was ever so nice and after dragging upteen seats out to the car park, none of them would fit!!!!!! The britax si might fit if we take the button thing off the seat belt but until we do this and take it back for another fitting we do not know. Spent ages trying them all. The lady was really good.

Did get the hi-liner for the big boys from argos -29.99. Mothercare price is about 54.99.
To think when I bought seats for my older two years ago no-body fitted them!! It was a case of which seat do you like and what colour.
  • Only just seen this thread and need to add my 2p. I'm afraid I am a car seat fanatic and always have been since my eldest (now 13) was born.

Get the right seat- check the britax fit finder etc. Know yourself how a good seat should fit in the car. Forward facing it should sit against the car seat without gaps, when you install it with the 3point belt kneel in (it yes withyour weight on it) to push it iinto the seat cushion then pull the belt as tight as you can. THe fit should be such that when you shake the seat the car moves! Put seats left indents in the upholsterty that too a while to "fluff up" after the seats were removed- this is OK my kids were as safe as they could be.

Use each stage car seat till you child is at the very limit of height/weight. Ignore age, children are different. For "giant babies" try to keep them rear facing, even if you need to buy a new seat (the sort that will face both ways).

Last daft, boring comment- don't ever not use a seat----we didin't accept lifts unless there was an appropriate seat that I was happy with. I offered lifts to others and had appropriate seats for them which they sat in- my car my rules:rotfl:

My youngest is 7, she has britax highliners in both cars and will be in them for ages yet, even though at 134cm she "nearly legal" not to have one (the limit on the seat is higher than the law). We have booster seats and cushions to carry 5 her friends too (gathered over years of parenting:o ) !

If you have any doubts about the cost/inconvenience/"embarrasment" for an older child etc, here is another of those awful videos from you tube, such a lovely, lovely girl, who was killed because she was on a booster cushion and should have been in a 5 point seat:(

  • The carseat itself is quite uncomfortable. Limited padding and my daughter finds the head support very claustrophbic and annoying. Very difficult to see out of the window and hard and unyielding (not saying it should be 'yielding' but when on a long journey the child should be comfortable). As she always fiddles with the uncomfortable head support, the polestyrene has crumbled away and snapped off. She has done nothing but complain about this seat since the day we got it.
It also states quite clearly that it is suitable for age 4 and up. (Some carseats detail Age 3 and 15kg, others 4 and 15kg.) Britax quite clearly state age 4.

How old is your DD? i have a 7 yr old who has had this for over a year without problems (and my neice a year or so younger also has one). Infact my 7 yr old still sleeps on long journeys in it without lolling about because of the head restraint. I agree seems abit lacking in padding bu we don't get complaints even though DD is long and bony!

My attitude (and I know I am a car seat nazi:rotfl: ) would be that the side imapact and head protection is vital and if the seat is broken I would replace it with maybe the concorde model to see if she found that better. I would couple this with my usual bribery for fidgety kids on journeys- CD players/headphones/gameboys anything to keep them quiet and still! BUT they all know that the car seat isn't negotiable- everyone in the car sits safe.

    Hi,

While searching the internet for more info on car seats, I came across this....

    http://www.rsa.ie/publication/publication/upload/which%202004.pdf?PHPSESSID=b0ec162b3bf4c0178c6c47b886c6840d

Please have a read as it may be of some help to ppl who are deciding on the right car seat to buy for their child. However pls bear in mind this publication came out in June 2004 so is abit old.

  • just bought 2 britax hi-liners for my 4yr old and nearly 3yr old (to use later), just wondered he is 13kg now age nearly 3 i shouldn't think it'd take that long for him to put on the extra 2kg but should i wait till he's 4 or wait till he's the right weight to use the hi-liner???

plus really peed off as i paid £72 for my 2 hi-liners didn't realise they where cheaper at argos!!
Other women want a boob job. Honey the only silicone i'm interested in is on a 12 cup muffin tray, preferably shaped like little hearts
