I'd like to join SW but I get too scared :(

Pleeese don't be scared willow. It's the best thing I've done in years. I took an age dithering, then found out the times on the net then just went before I had time to change my mind. Everyone's in the same position as you so they don't judge. I've met some lovely people there. Now's a good time to try as there're often vouchers on flyers through your door or in magazines. I'll let you know if I hear of any. At the very worst, if you went once you'd get the talk through the plan and the books so you could do it at home.
I watched that "Biggest Loser". I found it cruel but then I don't like "humiliation TV" - worse than watching a Roman Circus. I can only assume the "Contestants" were just desperate to be on TV.

I watched it too and totally agree. I expect the £25 000 prize may have something to do with why they want to be there. I dont think I'll become a regular viewer!

Today (as well as the sitting room deep clean), I cleared out a couple more kitchen cupboards. I also did my nails as well as sticking to healthy eating (first day I haven't succumbed to some Christmas LOs).

Off to bed now I need beauty sleep!

Evilsquid - is it worth maybe checking with tax credits whether they would class an internship or something as 'working' and therefore you could claim that? I know when I was self employed a few years ago I was basically earning nothing and living off tax credits for a while.

i'll ask the job centre next time i'm in. I'm thinking of asking them if theres any courses i can get sent on so I'm at least out and doing something. I've recently got really interested in beauty and make up (comes with the territory when all you like is your face lol) and I was wondering if they'll help me set up my own business doing something with that but as i have zero qualifications in it and i already have a degree i bet i get told no.
That is just ridiculous, talk about "benefit trap" . Why oh why do they do this. And yet, they allow people to volunteer in charity shops etc.

In fact most charity shops are forced to take on a certain amount of "naughty people" - as my Scope manager delicately puts it. People who are unemployed and have committed crime - wait for it - so that they can get some work experience and thus become more employable.

Oooh I'm getting angry again just thinking about the injustice to you.

the whole thing is ridiculous. all the jobs are being advertised with just silly experience levels because employers know they can be ridiculously picky with who they employ so young people who need that first "proper" job are left out to dry.

The job centre just think I'm joking when i say the legal job market is just stupid atm. one advert i saw was for a 6 month PA/intern/paralegal/dogsbody for a commercial property firm in london. must have law degree min 2:1 with the legal practise course passed, working 5 days a week, 9-5 with overtime to be expected and worked no questions asked, no expenses travel or otherwise paid but "you got to work with a high profile solicitor in a commercial firm". zero prospects of an actual job afterwards with them and £0 salary offered!

    you're not alone!

i feel that way sometimes, all my friends that i graduated with have managed to get jobs now and i just haven't. I've had interviews and just never seem to get offered the actual job. all the feedback i get is "we love you and you'd fit in perfectly with our firm! however, someone had 2 years experience and can fill in the forms now that we'd have to spend a bit of time teaching you so it was a business decision."

Sparkles - Well done on signing up for the half marathon, love that you said you only need to double your mileage! :D We all know how determined you are, you can do it for Team Solstice!

    Hi BBTHREE, welcome.

evilsquid - It's very unlikely the job centre will pay for any specialised courses (I asked a while back, and got told no chance.) They will generally only pay for basic literacy qualifications and things directly relating to job searching, eg CV writing and interview technique courses.

Willow - Hope you can make it to your first SW meeting soon. There will probably be plenty of new people starting in January, so you won't be the only new face there and even if you only go for a few weeks, once you've got the books you can do it yourself at home.

I watched the Biggest Loser, I really miss Angie, I can already see that the new lady trainer is nowhere near as good. :( I do find that it motivates me to exercise when I see others exercising furiously. However it is sad when contestants are upset because they 'only' lost 6lbs in a week, that is a brilliant achievement, but they are not celebrating this, they are berating themselves. I am well chuffed if I lose 1 pound in a week, I would have to throw a party if I lost 6 at once!

I have done my exercise DVD, 35 minutes aerobics/weights and used a body mitt for the first time in the shower, thanks for the recommendation LL! :) I got it as part of a gift set for Christmas and was wondering how/why to use it. My upper arms are quite 'goosebumpy', but after scrubbing them with the mitt, they do feel a little improved. I am also going to get a body brush soon, if I see a reasonably priced one.

Sister phoned earlier to check if I had my wedding outfit, so sent her a link to the dress I have bought and she doesn't like it, says it is too dark and she doesn't like the flowers either! :( I am going to a shopping centre tomorrow as I was going to get the accessories, but now I am back to square one and looking for a whole new outfit. I feel quite panicky about it now as I spent hours finding the one I already have, and what will I do if I can't get another one...

I can understand she is stressed with less than two weeks to go, but she keeps saying how she doesn't want the women in her family to let her down on the day. It's not like we're going to turn up looking like bag ladies! I feel a bit insulted, but will bite my lip as it's her day and I am probably just being over sensitive anyway.

Morning everyone! Today I have work until 2 and then I will: exercise, do a face mask, do some uni work and have a sort through just one drawer of clothes.
I thought of some more Bs :D
Boobs- Evening Primrose Oil for sore boobs and PMT, works a treat to reduce aches and is very cheap from HB, Lidl, Wilko etc
Bums- Sitting at a desk all day or watching telly? Do bum squeezes! Squeeze your bum cheeks and hold for 2 seconds then relax, do it as many times as you can then relax for a few minutes and do it again.

    fedupandskint
    well done signing up :j

callisto you could just get a plain dress in a nice cut that will go with all the nice accessories you get?

    evilsquid
 seriously?!! that's ridiculous. wouldn't you still get something due to having a low income? i was thinking more for science jobs as labs often pay the interns £8hr+(which science btw?) i know law is madness- my friend has a law degree from oxford and a qualification in french law and is scuppered too. why do they make life so hard for us genuine nice people
i know it's not relevant to the thread but i hate the "who you know, not what you know" attitude. one of my housemates is immature, lazy and frankly stupid, but had work experience at a top london spread better because of who he knew. another friend on our course gets 95%+ marks and is amazingly dedicated and on the ball but struggles to get experience even though in her native south africa her dad is a director at a big finance company but it doesn't work that way there! it really frustrates me that he is so lazy and incompetent but will probably get a better job more easily than the rest of us, he's not even nice to have around! jeez, does anyone actually know a recent graduate with prospects?
Living cheap in central London :rotfl:

Sparkles - well done on signing up for the half marathon!

Prepareathome - I'd second the LHC forums. Lovely bunch of people and lots of articles on various hairstyles. Plus youtube videos as well. I haven't had long hair in about 8 years (it's only about armpit length so not long long) so couldn't remember how to do anything and now I have a whole list of styles I can do!

Maman - no not a goth wedding :) Mainly traditional although I am trying to steer away from that as much as possible. I am very untraditional and my own person, whereas the fianc!'s family are very traditional and the type of people who insist on sticking their beaks in and so on - he finds it easier to go along with them a lot.
We are having a Christian ceremony which I'm dreading as I'm Pagan and to me it's standing there and telling lies, but it'll keep him happy. I'm insisting on adding in a unity candle and Pagan reading, and then adding in lots of our personality in little touches and making as much myself as possible.

  • sparkles Well done on signing up for the half marathon, it will be good to have something to aim for.

Callisto - I cannot believe your sister said that - I would be
However, how about trying the personal shopper service that someone (sorry I don't remember who) recommended? If you tell them you're looking for a dress for a special wedding and see what they recommend - if you don't like it, you haven't lost anything but if you do, you know you have something that fits and suits you. And don't show it to your sister before the day!

I did some exercise again last night on move fitness - wasn't half an hour though - and my shoulders are super painful this morning!!

Today I will dress nicely (maybe even a dress with tights!) and wear make-up as my parents will arrive today and want to look nice.
