H2B is threatening to send my pusses to the RSPCA! Ive scrubbed the carpet, lifted it, put bicarb down, cleaned it with a vax and burned insence so far! But the whole house is still stinking :(

Anyone got any tips to help me before my cats are sent to glue factory?! :(

Just posted this on flylady but here it goes again ;)

    Rug doctor.

We have a feral in the house, and she's not truly go to grips with litter trays. The rug doctor stuff is what has kept my sanity over winter. we cleaned the carpetsin December as with a hired machine and kept some hampoo and the sprays.

The ''urine eliminator'' spray is highly effective. Vets sell something similar but its more expensive.

I know use rug doctor shampoo by hand with a cloth then the urine elimintaor spray. I know its not OS, but it works better than anything else I tried and really, a home smelling of cats is NOT good for health of them or us, and just not nice. So, its one of the occasions I'm sticking to chemicals.

Had this when cat was ill - it did go (in the end!) - put piles of bicarb of soda down and just left it there (for weeks!) - staiend carpet a bit but thank goodness smell went.

I used copious amounts of biological washing liquid which worked. One thing you must never do is use bleach as apparently it smells similar to wee to cats and encourages them to go back and cover it up with more wee.

  • Bicarb seems to work.

I'm with H2B on that one. Cat wee is gross and I couldn't live in a house where a cat did that
  • I'd have thought that patience and bicarb would work :)

Alternatively, take a look at this older thread; I'll merge this later.

  • I got up to the bathroom in the early hours of this morning and virtually fell over someone else's cat outside my bedroom door!!

I chased him out - he made a rapid exit through the cat flap in the kitchen, but as I came back upstairs there was a strong smell of cat wee on the stair carpet. I've sprinkled where I think it is with bicarb, and will wash it off with water in a minute.

This cat has been in before, but only as far as the kitchen. I may have to get one of those electronic cat flaps that recognise your own cat's microchip and only open for that. I bet they're expensive though!

My own cat by the way was sleeping on my bed, and just woke up and sat there looking a bit worried, then lay down again. She's just a coward!

Lots of biological washing powder - the enzymes will break up the protein in the urine which makes it smell. Once you have washed and rinsed it thoroughly put towels on to soak up the wet with a heavy weight on it (your OH will do if he is threatening to send them to the RSPCA lol!) for a few days until dry - if you can dont let the cats into this area whilst it is drying.

That should get rid of it ;)
