  • What a nice thread.

Well done on all the debts paid, weddings, new jobs, promotions, etc.

I carried on reducing my debts this year. It's a relief just to see that figure go down.

My biggest achievement was having my son, it's put the rest of my worries into perspective.

Merry christmas and a wonderful new year to you all.

main one is I stuck the job i hate so that I can get DF and then make a decision as to what to do from there when I owe nothing to anyone :-)

I made the job i hate a better job by trying to change my attitude towards it ..it helped a little and it also taught me that sometimes its just the way we see things that makes them a problem if you turn it round n look the other way it can sometimes look a helluva lot better so 2011 taught me to stop being a pessimistic mare!

Sounds exactly like my life !!!

I learned to genuinely appreciate what I have got, which leaves far less time and room to worry about things I haven't.
2012 will be a stupendous year.
Like all revolutions, guerrilla goodness begins slowly, with a single act. Let it be yours.

Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty.
  • This year I have...
    • become debt free (finally!!!)
    • passed my GTP (teaching qualification)
    • got a permanent teaching post at a fab school
    • starting saving (wow...that really is a bizarre feeling!!)
    • use my credit card sensibly - buy things to get online security etc, but now ALWAYS pay off the whole balance every month
    • not gone into debt to pay for my holidays (fortnight in Ibiza and a week in Lapland, plus a long weekend away in this country too)
Not a bad year for me...it's taken a long time from my LBM to becoming debt free, but it was worth the struggle. Hang on in there if you're still working towards becoming debt free...it's a fabulous feeling :j

    Let's see:

    * Got a MUCH better job within my current employer with a - very helpful - relocation allowance.
    * This in turn allowed me to take driving lessons and pass my test - first time - in 3 months. :j
    * Got my first car, bought outright and so too is the insurance.
    * My wife is pregnant and is expecting our first child. :D
    * Finally sold our house (annoyingly at a loss), but a sale is better than no sale.
    * My second job is still ticking over nicely and I've added a lot of additional authored work to my portfolio.
    * Been streamlining my finances and old debts, making the most of my fee-free  Staff Cashback Credit card.
    * Been educating my wife on how to save money without cutting back via switching deals, Quidco etc. Very helpful with the little one on the way!

So yea, been a busy year, not much stability since the move in the summer, but overall, still be doing a fair bit to improve my life.

It's great to see others have done positive things to enhance their lives, long may it continue! :T
  • This year I achieved the end of 2 years of paying off debt. In May 2011 I cleared £38,000 of debt and was debt free for the first time in 14 years. I had a bl**dy good June - nice shiny new T.V. and Bluray - paid for with actual money rather than credit!

Since July I have been saving for a deposit for my first home and am on my way to having £20,000 by December 2012.

I cannot describe the feeling of being free from Credit Cards and loans, it's amazing.

These boards were a real encouragement to me, even though I have never really posted it was helpful to hear(read!) other people's experiences and it did give me the nudge to carry on.

So, thanks to everyone who told their stories and have a great (but fiscally sensible) Christmas.

    Rich.

Loving the stories , well done everyone on your successes.

2011 , joined in the various challenges and for the 1st time in years have managed to save for Christmas.

I have bought everyone lovely presents paid for in CASH, saved a fortune by following the grabbit thread and buying everything at greatly reduced prices.

I am looking forward to Christmas without worrying about how we are going to pay for it all.

Jan 2012 is the last payment on our trust deed . Looking forward doing things the MSE way in 2012

All the very best to every single one of you x

  • A year without any credit cards loans etc. A christmas bought and paid for xx
  • What a lovely thread, well done everyone on your successes. Here's mine:

In August I started a new job within the same company. It was a promotion to a new team, new department. I left behind a job where I was bullied and depressed. The new job is motivating, challenging, working for and with brilliant people and I've never been happier at work.

My spending habits have completely changed. I haven't used credit since September and really think about what I'm spending. I've discovered batch cooking and lost over half a stone in the process! Alongside discovering I can run and actually almost enjoy it!

In September (not a coincidence it was after moving roles) I had a light bulb moment strong enough to blind! Since then I have paid almost £2.5k off my debts and all the debts are now on 0% interest.

This is the first Christmas I haven't used credit and it's also the cheapest Christmas I've had yet.

Ditched a loser boyfriend ;) and instead gained a spreadsheet with 15 tabs! haha!!

Feels good to write it all down. Roll on 2012 that debt won't know whats hit it!
