Assuming you're talking Data Protection, of course they can ask. They're not breaking any rules.

    Only with consent.
Just DPA disclaim your applications. Trust me, having the WP or JCP contact an employer to confirm your application does nobody any favours.

And, on that note, it's time to sleep.
The WP had me waste 4 and a half hours on a group interview for a low paid, part-time job earlier and I need to make up for the wasted time.

Make up for what, sleep? LOL Serious? Surely that should be job seeking

    for something like this maybe.

I missed out on a contract role last Monday as I was not at home to call back the agency and when I got home and contacted the guy he said they had to move quickly and get CV's over and it was too late. I am going to tell them that too and if they want me to get a job I need to be at home at least to reply to emails or call the people back.

or is it only you that the WP is a total waste of time for?

    Cheeky. Lol

No, I like to get up early and get right to the good old interwebs for jobhunting.
I lost Monday morning so I got up early on Tuesday and found myself 4 good vacancies. Then I had to go to the Work Programme for the 2nd day in a row.

Very interesting day at Ingeus. I was told people were pre-screened for this low paid, part-time bar job, but even though I wasn't I must still go to this group interview.
If I have any doubts about the job, don't raise them, if they ask me a question I can't positively answer then lie to the employer.
So all in all, I spent 11am-3.30pm away from my usual jobsearch to play group interview games for 16 hours of minimum wage, unsocial hours at Wetherspoons, all without benefit of prior notice.

These jobs, incidentally, were not publicly listed. Ingeus UK's new labour market strategy is to secure exclusive access to vacancies with employers in the area.
I'm sure this is perfectly legal and perfectly damaging.

Knowing my luck, I'll just sink further into debt and impoverishment, because I really don't want this role but I aced the interview.
The other people Ingeus sent either purposefully said the wrong things or they genuinely don't know how to conduct themselves at an interview.
I'd never say I got sacked for smacking around the manager because I wasn't paid on time. lol.

Yes I am with you on that - why waste peoples time when it takes forever and a day to get there and back when we could be up and on the look out online etc at 8am instead they get us travelling miles to waste hours doing nothing

I have my review tomorrow which will be a joke to say the least

Ouch, you have my sympathies. Will this review involve criticising your approach like we have a robust economy and labour market?

I'll be sat by the phone tomorrow. An insurmountably happy Ingeus adviser from the Liverpool office called me earlier telling me to expect a telephone interview for a contact centre job.
I'm actually hoping this one goes well. A decent wage and full time hours. It knocks the socks of that crappy part time bar job my adviser wants me to chase.

A lot of websites don't use reference numbers these days.
They're a sort of redundant feature in a digital era. You don't need to tell the employer what the actual job you want is because your application is accessed directly from the advert.
also what about jobs advertised in shop windows or in your local newspaper. basically advisers want a job reference number to make it easier for them to snoop and possibly hassle the employer about the vacancy.
edit. also to add when my adviser hassled me about a number they didnt say anything about the source. its like i said the dumb idiot assumed all jobs applied for are on the jobcentre website.

could even answering a question like that be breaking the data protection act? afterall you havent gave the employer permission to give out any info to a third party.
