In the Guardian yesterday there was an expose on the work programme. A single mum aged 40 was sent to do an unpaid 12 week work placement in a care home.
Cant help wondering what the relatives of the residents in the home would think of that. Especially the relatives who are paying through the nose for their elderly relatives care.

I just had a read through the Guardian article and get the impression that the mother was tricked into doing the work placement. Furthermore the article imply's that the unemployed have low IQ ,Barely able to read or write or have a very basic numeracy, And may have problem with drugs or alcohol.

On the whole it seems threat of sanctions may have been used to coerce the jobseekers in to line before the reporter arrived.

Note how the blame game is used. That the problem must somehow lie with the jobseeker.

Many people now being transferred to the work program are
very well qualified and have a great deal of experience in their
fields. How are these companies going to deal with these type
of Jobseekers, Very poorly I expect.

Most of the work I do now a days is overseas where the employers do employ Englishmen. What work I get over here is to check and sign off work done by Eastern Europeans.

.... I should be starting some voluntary work soon but am due to start on the work programme next week, does that affect anything. Can I still do the voluntary work?
Pretty sure that you couldn't do voluntary work whilst signing on without approval from JCP even before you got inducted to the work programme. So in answer to your question, I would say it's highly unlikely!

the wp is actively encouraging me to do voluntary work and is trying to help me arrange something (you can't even give your time away round here at the moment)

sadly I haven't got anywhere near enough experience to apply for a management role, I've always just been "staff"

.... I have been referred to the Work Programme and have got my "Induction" at Ingeus next Thursday, dreading it. Sitting there with a bunch of chavs and being patronised for a few hours. Have been told to take a copy of my CV in, not sure what to expect though.

not everyone who goes on the wp is a chav that is very rude of you to come on this thread and assume they are.

. . . . I'm really sorry, I know I shouldn't generalise but I'm just going off what I see in the job centre every fortnight.

well I've just completed my first "guided" job search and what a waste of time. I was told to be there for 10.30 arrived onetime but all the working computers were being used. Finally got on to one at 11am only to find the internet connection so slow that all the sites were timing out before they were loading

I'm still waiting to see what the guided part was though because I was just told to do what I do at home lol

that's pathetic that, the JCP don't have a clue... and I've just been told they can 'threaten sanctions' on people who refuse to sign some document or do the WP
