I don't agree he should have been asked.

Some would ask, some would prefer to give something.

    Nothing wrong with either imo.

Yay! You gave up! I win. :p:D
Of course he should have been asked, otherwise it's a pointless (giver friendly) gift!

Apart from that, you win, have my last Rolo, you deserve it. :p

And some (I for one) do nothing!? Surely it is a nice gesture to give something rather that ignore somebody that might be needy.

Unfortunately i have little time to spare and little excess money to give, and with the little i had left over if i were going to give it to the homeless i'm afraid i would give a hot drink rather than the £1 in his hand.

i know in Dublin when i was there over the summer for a few days there were a youngish bloke begging on the bridge, can't remember the name. we were waiting for the bus, just watching, and saw a bike stood there on its own, not chained up. I kid you not the guy got up, put his expensive Nike trainers and sped off on this expensive bike and someone took over his spot. To say i was shocked was an understatement. But I do believe there are many homeless people about, and always try and buy the big issue when i see a seller at any time of the year (one in particular stood out in Bristol over the summer, right friendly chap he was and helpful) Like it says on the book its a hand up not a hand out, very very true

In my teens I had a saturday job in a store Mum goes to a lot ;) The shop had big glass windows so from my position on the checkout I could see all of the precinct outside.

Every saturday a woman who seemed to be about mid 50's would turn up and sit outside in a wheelchair with some sign or other about how she was paralysed and hard up. I felt sorry for her the first day until my colleague said "watch this".......

At around 5pm we would reduce bread and milk etc as there were no sunday openings then, the reduced goods were placed on a rack in view of the doors. No sooner had colleague produced her reduction gun when wheelchair woman was up and out of the chair in a blur, racing in grabbing armfuls of bread and anything else reduced.

Now, I could understand her waiting for the reductions, but to sit and pretend all day that she was paralysed?

The boss at that store was great though, a homeless old fella lived behind the store and we'd always save him a loaf and a bottle of milk or something and put it out on the back steps, despite protocol that anything unsold should be thrown into the compactor.

There's no homeless people round here - a couple of Roma gypsies hang around selling Big Issues but there's no way in hell they're homeless. They're far too clean and unrumpled for one thing.

I do however see a couple with their dog on the same doorstep quite often when I go to Leeds on business. They are most definitely drunks so I don't bother giving them money...I cut out the middle man and give them alcohol and a few tins of dog food (to be blunt...the dog is a bigger priority for me in those case and I figure that money would go on booze, not the dog, so far easier to just buy them booze and the dog some food).

Warm socks/jumpers seem like a good idea to me - or a waterproof bag. Chandlers tend to do the best one as obviously yachting is a wet passtime!

I think Big Issue sellers can be homeless or "vulnerably housed". Not entirely sure of the definition. Maybe, like, sleeping on friends' floors or in shelters and suchlike, where you'd have access to a shower in the morning but would have to be out of the door all day.

op this is such a lovely story and such a kind thing to do.

im sat in bed now hearing the horrible wind and rain and cant imagine what it would feel like to have to sleep on the streets.
i would do exactly the same as you, but it does make me sad that some people are so closed off and cynlical.
if he sells it, he sells it, but you have tried to do something nice to another human being and thought of someone else and that can never be a bad thing and the time when people stop doing that we will all be worst off for it.

i truly believe just for a set of circumstances we could all end on the streets, it is heartening to think that there are people who think and care about others when they walk past.

also please let us know if your colleague managed to give them to him.

homless people where i live have access to hostels, there are a few around, they have access to showers, cooking facilities, washing machine/dryers as well as a bed.
just because someone looks clean dosent mean they cant be homeless.
also as someone else said they could be sleeping at friends or families, as i had to when i became homeless with 2 young kids after the breakdown of my marriage
loves to knit and crochet for others
