  • It's shameful behaviour, but maybe less shameful than mugging some poor soul or burglary. Many homeless are drug addicts, I wonder how many families desperately struggled before they had to put their own protection first and ask the addict to leave.

(SORRY - see original post for the Daily Mail link)

Anyhoo, despite the link taking you to a Littlejohn article, if you ignore him, but read the experiences of a wouldbe volunteer trying to help the homeless in such organisations, you can see why they're struggling.

There are a dearth of help available outside highly populated areas, and doorways are often the only option. But as another has said, if we all do a little, the result is a lot.

To be honest the article is typical Daily Mail.

It costs charities a lot of money to get each volunteer in to the front line so therefore accepting someone who wants to volunteer just for Christmas would be un-economical.

More importantly why would you only want to volunteer for just ONE day a year!

Homeless people are here 365 days a year.

If you want to help then volunteer your time throughout the year...even one day a month is much more sense than one or two days a year.

The Daily mail piece even said about the volunteer having passed a CRB check 8 years ago....I can imagine the outcry if a Homelessness charity allowed one of their clients to be harmed or abused by a volunteer in any way if they had let a that person work for them on the strength of a CRB check 8 years out of date.

Finally there is not a dearth of help outside of major population areas the charity I'm involved in is in a country town as are many others.

Maybe GravityTolls should be renamed Gravity TROLLs!

    Sorry rant over!

Such a thoughtful thread from the OP. :A

There was a homeless man found dead on the beach a few miles from here a couple of weeks ago. Died from hypothermia. :(
  • Nice thought OP, I'm sure he'll appreciate it. I used to work up on The Strand where there are many homeless people living in doorways. I did not give to them all, it would have been impossible, but two young lads were there day in day out in a certain doorway. They didn't beg, they were just there to sleep. They were bedding down for the night when I left work and just waking up when I arrived every morning. I decided not to give them money as I didn't want to compound any drink/drug issues so every day I would take them tea and in the evening would give them my luncheon vouchers to make sure they would be eating...they were very grateful.
At Christmas I have also given a fair bit of money to Big Issue sellers who I have seen throughout the year and who are always polite and friendly. I remember one particular chap who I had watched for a while over a few weeks...I gave him £20 and he was genuinely overjoyed and I was really happy to read in a later Big Issue which had an article about him in that he was now in a flat and had a job.
I think that, if , like the OP, you see the same homeless person every day, you can probably gather whether they are genuine and would appreciate a litle help.
    Good luck OP:)

You really think it will make much difference? Homeless people die young. A few comforts now won't matter.

And a Happy New Year to you too. :rotfl:

There sure is a dearth of help in our area, perhaps we're too middle class .... just a bit more trolling, humourless lug that I am. :D

Just wondered if there was an update from the OP on her generous gift.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

You could die tomorrow-God forbid-brain haemorrhage, car accident, any one of a million things could kill you before you reach the "statistical average" life expectancy.
I guess that means you're not entitled to any comforts...

OP, this guy isn't in Kingston, is he?
  • I think it was a wonderful gesture, who cares if he sells the stuff at least he knows that at the end of the day one person has thought he matters and that means a lot. Hopefully he is somewhere with his new socks on in his sleeping bag and feels warm and fuzzy that someone cared enough to buy him a wonderful heartfelt present. Cats you are very thoughtful and hope you have enjoyed your christmas safe in the knowledge you are a lovely person.
Well Done and i am looking forward to hearing what happened.:T
