I am a lorry driver. The vehicle I drive has its tacho checked for calibration every 2 years and has to be more accurate than a car. In the wagon I am forced to do 45 MPH behind someone in a car and cannot get past them because of the car drivers in L2 who should be in L1 who are also doing 45MPH.

If you're in L1 you're not a problem. But if you're like the melons hogging L2 then you are a problem. I cannot go in L3 because the law doesn't allow me to.

"But you'll only lose 5 minutes" is the usual cry. Yes but if I do that stretch 6 times in a day, thats 30 minutes. I am legally restricted in the hours I can do and that 30 minutes can mean the difference between doing a run or not and can cost me a few hours overtime and the company I'm driving for £200 or more in lost business. Multiply that over a week and then over the 3 years these roadworks are in place and thats over 2000hrs overtime I could lose and £150k worth of lost business for my employer.

That's the problem with drivers that don't understand how they actually drive.
That stretch would have to be 38 miles long to lose 5 minutes, driving at 45 rather than 50.
In reality it's half a minute for the 4 miles you're panicking over.
So 3 minutes if you do it 6 times. Not even another coffee stop.

They also need to put a stop to things like that M6 roadworks from a few years back that had 4 miles of 50 limit, but only 1/2 a mile was actually being worked on at any one time, the rest didn't even have cones!

At above, 1 minute 22 seconds longer over the whole 4 miles doing 50 instead of 70.
    Not a long time really.
  • They DO work at night and your sat nav is correct. It is GPS and a lot more accurate than your speedo. Hope this is a difinitive answer to all of these threads.

I've often wondered why it is necessary for it to be advertised at the roadside that a set of cameras is not in use.

There must be a legal technicality for this because, even if they are not in use, unannounced they would still tend to keep the average motorist within the speed limit.

I set my cruise control to 50 in the average speed zones.
If somebody wants to argue whether that is the correct speed then they can sue my car manufacturer.

I don't give a stuff what speed you go at so long as you are not sitting in the outside lane holding me up, thumb up bum brain in neutral to be honest.

On the M1 roadworks at Nottingham when they were doing the lane widening from J28 to J25 it was over 15 miles long and regularly ended up below 45MPH due to numpties.

The amount of times I see people flying through these 50mph average camera zones at well over 70mph always makes me think that the cameras don't even work. I always feel like a right idiot as I'm sat on the inside lane doing 50mph and literally everyone is zooming past me.

Don't feel like an idiot... My husband is an accountant and deals with all the speeding tickets that come in for the company's sales people who zoom around the country in their company cars. They don't care about the tickets. I'm guessing you do (I would). :)

It's none of your beeswax whether they are speeding or not. I have never had a ticket for speeding either. My point is by not following the highway code you are little better than them. All you have to do is move left one lane to let them through, is that too hard for you?

Yes it is, they are using a road system that is for everybody and if they deliberately drive in a manner that could endanger myself then I would continue to drive in a lawful manner and if it upsets Jensen Button behind me then tough titty.

The question is, what special dispensation do your like have for speeding and possibly endangering other road users?

    .

Hmmm, yes, and that's the frightening thing, you can't even do the math in working out your ETA as demonstrated by your earlier post.

Thank God you appear to use a road network far from me!

The car manufacturer has done nothing wrong. They are allowed to over read by 10%+6 (e.g. a 70mph reading could give you an actual speed of below 59mph). They are not allowed to under read at all.
