Apologies if this is a really stupid question :D

I travel on a stretch of the M62 every day which has these cameras (going to be there until 2013 apparently:()

Can someone tell me whether the cameras still work at night ? The section is lit so would the camera still read your numberplate ? I see people flying past me whilst i'm doing 50, am i being dim ?

I don't know about when they work, but I have known a good many people who believe that they can get away with speeding, until it finally catches up with them (so to speak).

They are all getting a penalty charge, yes they work, in West Yorkshire they are processing 3000 charges a week from the average speed cameras on the 62.
Some quite clearly dont get how they work, the other half think your sat nav displays the right speed and not your cars speedometer

Your sat nav does. your speedo always reads under.

most cars speedo's read aprox 10% over what you are doing,

and yes, all speed cameras in operation work at night

Yes they do work in the dark. The cameras have infra red illumination on them, the boxes either side of the camera are the lamps.

    This old one.

So my speedo is 10% under.
    The cameras give you 10% + 7mph.
So my speedo can read 67mph and I'll still be ok?

I'll stick to 50mph, as my sat nav, and speedo both agree, and in 50 miles it'll take me 15 minutes longer. I can live with that.
Over a mile is it worth it for 18 seconds?
  • So what speed fo they fire the tickets out do we think? It clearly isnt 50 otherwise there would be many many more tickets issued

Thanks for all the replies peeps. I do wonder sometimes, like tonight, i was driving back at about 7pm, pootling along at 50mph and people were zooming past at 70mph at least, it just made me wonder whether i could have speeded up a bit ! Glad i didn't now. I do think some people think you can just be doing 50 when you pass the camera and any speed in between !

As said by others the cameras do work at night in respect of the speed meaurement. The problem at night is getting the photographic evidence that is required to allow the NIP to be issued. That is why just before at least one SPEC camera in each direction you will notice a nice bright light on the verge pointing across the carriageway. IIRC on the Eastbound carrigaeway there is one on the last camera before the end of the 50 limit.

I spent over 15 years in highway/motorway maintenance and the latest SPEC3 cameras are multi-lane cameras so there are no hiding places. Also the old "change lanes between cameras" method doesn't work now as the Statutory Instrument has been changed.

I go through at 51 on the SatNav and 55 on the speedometer which is about right from when I last calibrated the speedometer.

It would be unusual for the prosecution threshold to be below the ACPO guidelines of 10% + 2mph but it could be less due to accuracy available from the latest SPEC3 systems.

Sorry that's what I should have said, the speed you are doing is under the speed displayed.
