Competitions Discussion Thread Part 16

Thanks fire**fly, I've been trying to not rebump it myself to ask everyone else to please stop. :rotfl:
In my opinion, we keep it simple. If there's a Twitter comp which needs defined by end time as well as the current date (e.g. E: 29/01 3:00PM) then it goes in the thread. It's not exactly the end of the world though if some slip past it - like anything new, it'll take some time to work out the kinks.
You don't need to get email updates to subscribed threads - you can just have a quick look at your subscriptions if you want to see if anything has been posted.
I personally don't think it matters if there are expired competitions in the thread (though others may disagree). There are expired competitions in the puzzle magazine threads (aren't there? or are they deleted?), but I know I don't notice them because I work my way backwards through them, thanking as I enter, so I know where I've finished each time I'm in them. I'd see this working the same way.Hmmmm, need new siggie :cool:0 -
I did initially think it was a good idea, but didn't realise that it was going to cause so much controversy. I think that I will go back to doing what I was doing previously and enter most twitter competitions directly from twitter. I just have a mooch around on twitter and see what other people are retweeting. If I see one on there that I don't think I have seen posted on here, then I will post it. I will also go back to sometimes doing a quick search on here for "twitter" and entering any that I haven't seen before that are not in game over.
With twitter competitions, it doesn't matter if the promoter tweets about the competition at say 5pm, 7pm and 9pm and you retweet them all. You won't disqualify yourself by doing that.0 -
Try searching twitter OR tweet (Note the OR must be capitals)
If there are any recently posted short-lived twitter comps they should appear on the first page.

How do we get people to go back and delete their previous threads?
How do we make sure that people who do not wish to subscribe to the thread and get loads of emails get to see it?
How do we stop people bumping the thread with chat?
If we have 'post as normal, then add to this thread as well' how do we stop the then 'bumps' of someone not doing both, and someone posting to say they have either posted it, or added it to the thread (this is ok for normal posts, if you have it ticked you dont have to re enter the thread unless you want to see what else has been posted, with this one you would have to check)
What about facebook comps, itv comps, other magazine comps, radio comps etc - just where do we stop having one thread fits all threads?
How do we help the people who comp in ways that they wont see the bumped thread (and who do not want to subscribe)?
Im not against new ideas, i wouldnt be against this idea, as i had a similar idea at the last big debate, but it got an all round no from the majority and in a democracy, majority rules. Im not going to comment again, as last time there was a big debate it got really nasty, some posters actually left, others got very upset and i dont think this is that important to be upsetting people.
you'll never stop peeps 'bumping' with chat/nothing to do with the comp/etc on any thread,
peeps using the thread for thier twitter comps i think would use the thread responsibly, deleting thier old comps to keep the new ones flowing, it's for thier benefit as well as others,
on the mag threads the 'thanks' button' shows you've entered that comp when a new one's posted, even if you've green ticked the main post, you can still click on thanks to track your entry on a long thread,
all the disc is about is the quick twitter ones, not all the other ones,
we all have to take responsibilty for our own ways of comping on hereplease be a responsible pet owner & spay/neuter your pets, too many strays & not enough homes for them sadly.0 -

I don't really have an opinion on the idea of a single thread yet as I haven't really thought about it, but just to pick up on this point.
When posting a "flash" competition (i.e. only open for a few hours or so), whether Twitter or Facebook it could be posted normally on the main board but with a tag of "flashcomp" (similar to "guessedenddate"). Then people could search at a convenient time for "flashcomp" and if they were viewing in most recent mode rather than alphabetical mode then all the most recent flash comps would be at the top. This assumes the search is working properly of course, but most of the time it is.
I usually enter competitions using the sorted by thread title mode, but I look now and then at the front few pages in normal mode (I say normal - I mean "last post time, descending" which I assume is default?) and see what's been newly posted. Usually if it's a quick one like many of the Twitter ones are the poster posts the thread with the yellow triangle symbol (like I've put on this post) which makes it easier to spot. It's always good when there's a time in the thread title as well.0 -

exactly :T:T:T way i see it it would work just the same as the TAB monthly & puzzler monthly,
no, the old comps in the mag threads don't get deleted, we run them to about 100 pages then ask/request a BG to ask if we can start a new thread & lock the 100 pages one & we start a new thread with a link to the old thread in case there's some still live comps on it, but yours wouldn't still have live comps in cause they're quick ones
i'm going over to your thread to delete my posts in it, hopefully the others will as well x
good luck & i hope your idea works out for you & twitter fans,
the comps are changing, the boards need changing/modernising, other comp sites have twitter/facebook threads on thier own,

In response to the one thread for all 'flash' Twitter comps - it seems it is already off track with one that is just ending soon (like the one posted on there already), as comping cat said, where is the line drawn? I'm really not in favour of the thread.
Someone posted that it isn't against the rules..... can I just ask you to have a read of: NEW GUIDELINES: Major Changes to Comp Posting- Read Before Posting
Last year there was a massive knock down & drag out about the fact that lots of comps were disappearing onto the Regular sub board & not being posted on main so masses of compers were missing their very existance. Huge discussions followed over a period of it felt like months but was probably only weeks with the conclusion that all comps with an end date are posted onto the main board in their own thread.
I can see why it has been suggested, but I'm sorry, it is not in spirit or keeping with the agreed posting of comps on the forum & is just going to stir things up again for no real gain.
1 comp - 1 thread, that way everyone (end-date-compers, comp-as-they're-posted-compers, dippers, searchers) is catered for. It is the result of a major discussion held which involved many more people than have had input on this topic this afternoon.Sad because you don't know what to do? Comping question? Take a look in the Comping Guide to find out0 -
