I've got a steam cleaner which is brilliant for shifting all the nasty gunge that lurks down & around plugholes. Mine is a proper pressurised cleaner, not one of those hand-held things, and not sure if they would be as effective. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -

I just wanted to say...
UGH YUK GROS!!!!
I hate it, but I've always had long hair so am pretty used to pulling my hair out of the plug every so often. I try and collect it while I'm showering just to keep it down....
But then that is worrying coz sometimes it makes me wonder how i'm not bald!!oooh look only about 220 posts and I got round to doing my Avatar already!!0 -
I use bleach regularly down my plugholes whenever I see ahir beginning to build up. A few applications left for as long as possible dissolves it.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

I use a wire brush fitted to a battery drill. If I don't have a charged one, a hand drill works as well but is a bit more work. There needs to be a nylon one made so that it's a bit easier on the plug hole.0

There's three of us with long hair in our house. I'm usually last through the shower so I clean out the trap then by lifting the hairs out with my fingers. They've not had time to get dirty or gross, they've just been washed after all! But if you do it every day the pipes don't get blocked. I can't be bothered with these little sink sieve thingies, they make the drain run slow and you end up standing in a puddle.
Incidentally I don't know why folk are so worried about caustic soda being bad for the environment. What do you think soap is made of? (Caustic soda and fat...) Bleach is far more toxic and we all seem to use enough of that.Val.0 -
I know this is an old thread, but someone asked about using hair remover cream diluted to clean hair brushes.
I can confirm that it works brilliantly, and you don't have to dilute it either. I just squeezed some between the bristles and left it for a while. Came up as if it was brand new.
I don't have really long hair, only just touching my shoulder, however I do malt rather a lot, always have doneSo I can confirm that hair removal cream really does work or hairbrushes.
*Can I just add though that if you have a really expensive hair brush I wouldn't recommend it as a piece of the handle of mine fell off after using the hair removal cream  I'm not sure if it was the cream but if did fall off after I'd used the cream.0 -
Also for plugholes, I found a pack of two things in the 99p shop. They're long bendy wiry strips with a head of velcro-type stuff, 2 different sizes.
You stuff them down, twirl them round and they bring the hair up with them.
They work brilliantly, but one of our plugs is too small for either of them.0 -
I use a small length of net curtain wire with a small hook screwed into the end.
Because it's flexible, it can access more gunk.
Then, once I've pulled most of the hair out, I use the Cillit Bang plughole stuff.Herman - MP for all!0 -
I use caustic soda - I've rarely seen it in supermarkets as they prefer to try to sell you expensive drain unblocker stuff, but caustic soda is much cheaper. It is obviously harmful to skin and don't breathe in the fumes, but it will get rid of the hair no problem, it's what many hairdressers' salons use in their sinks. I also have a big long pair of tweezers - they're about a foot long, got them from a betterware catalogue I think - and I can get most the hair out with them first. We all have long hair in our house but I always forget to collect the hair out of the plughole after using the shower
