I wouldn't be so quick to giggle. This stuff is taught as fact, or at least as a theory equal to evolution in many US schools.

The organisation sent free teaching materials to every British secondary school a few years back too.

Which is what worries me, as a Christian, in regards to these so called "free schools" that are spreading as fast as Japanese Knotweed, spurred on by the Government.

Children should be taught both theories and left to make up their own minds.

Issues of one sided views used to be limited to Faith schools (they at least have to follow the national curriculum) but now it's open season for teaching anything you like it seems.

It utterly baffles me why people support free schools.
  • Please remember the literalist interpretation of the bible is fairly recent and many Christians including Catholics have no problem with evolution. Creationism is mostly being imported from the US along with a very politically conservative form of Christianity supported by many rich benefactors. A similar thing is happening with the form of Islam exported from Saudi Arabia. We seem to be in a time when everyone is taking sides, moving to extremes and becoming more intolerant of others. I find this a great shame.

Guys, this is starting to look a bit like cats toying with a mouse now. You aren't going to score any points or change TQ's mind.

I was genuinely curious about what Christians believed when it came to the evolution of humans seeing as they say that God created Homo Sapiens in his image.

I have had this conversation before with a Christian (who wasn't very tolerant, he hated gay people because the Bible told him to. He got out his bible and pointed out the sections which told him to. He wanted them to convert to being straight or die). Anyway he couldn't answer me either and just kept repeating that God created us in his image.
Look in the mirror, we are now in His image and always have been.
God created us in His image as we are now a few million years ago.

No comment on Homo Erectus and Homo Habillis then?

A bit like Torry is doing, she won't answer me either. If there are no answers from Christians about this and Science has proof of evolution with Homo Erectus and Homo Habillis and the others then why should I listen to Christians who have no answers?

The answer to this one, apparently, is that Homo Erectus is "just" an ape, and is in no way an evolutionary step towards Homo Sapiens.

Creationists often look for gaps in the fossil record to support their arguments - and if archaeologists find something to fill a gap, then the Creationists just shrug and say that now there are two more gaps to fill.

It is this attitude that bugs me the most - the idea that we should not bother looking for answers, because "God has them all". If everybody held this view then we would still be living in caves, beating our dinner to death with clubs.

Ok I agree that Homo Habillis looks a bit ape like but there is no way Homo Erectus

    and Homo floresiensis

look like an ape. Christians are just ignoring evidence just because it doesn't fit with what some book (which could very well just be a story book) says. And that is the reason why I can never take Christianity seriously.

Give me some hard proof and I will change my mind but not before then

I have found this debate very interesting and some of the arguements are very well thought out and well debated

I just wanted to add my own viewpoint

Christmas is celebrated in this country as a public holiday, and is a significant event each year.
Christmasm as it is currently celebrated, is about the birth of Christ (The clue is in the name), therefore I think to teach children about Christmas it is necessary to teach about the birth of Christ. The navitity play is part of this teaching.
Whether you believe the story as fact, is up to you, what you tell your children is also up to you.

I believe it will be a sad day if we ever stop teaching the nativity for fear of offending.

Also to those of you saying your religion is a personal thing and that you shouldn't preach to others etc, so religions actually encourage you to go out and preach the good news, and it you are persecuted for it, your reward will be great in heaven.

I personally believe in God and am a Catholic, I feel no need to justify my beliefs to anyone, but if someone tries to convince me otherwise or tries to push their athesist agenda onto me, I will defend my religion and my choices.

I do not have blind faith in the Church, but do have faith in God. The Church is a man made institution, with man made rules, which are not always indicative of my personal beliefs.

I try to live my life as best as i can in a way that is pleasing to God.
