SORTED - Supermarket scrape - what will happen next?
At the local supermarket nephew hit a car next to him while reversing out. It is a bumper to bumper scrape. Only exchange/scrape of paint. No dents on either cars. The other car is old and had it's fair share of scrapes/dents. He assumed another one won't make any difference. Looking around he saw no-one and simply drove off.
After a week he received a letter from the police. It seems like a standard letter stating they intend to prosecute etc. An officer will be contacting him regarding the incident.
Any idea what will happen? Will he go to court? Any fines/points on his licence?
He passed his test over a year ago and did not know that he should at least leave his details under the windscreen wiper or inform the customer service etc.

He will be interviewed under caution and arrested if sufficient evidence exists that he left the scene of an accident.
It is a criminal offence to be involved in a Road Traffic Accident and to leave the scene.
Depending on the Police an the other owners intentions, he could be cautioned or bailed to appear before magistrates.
If he appears before magistrates, it is likely a fine will be imposed along with compensation to the owner of the damaged vehicle.0 -
Driving off and just assuming that another scrape won't make any difference is just plain selfish and arrogant. Yes the police will be looking now to see if they have a case against him as it is an offence not to report an accident within 24 hours which led to the damage of someones property.
FYI I also drive a scruffy car but that doesn't give anyone the right to add more paint damage to it and drive off does it!0 -
6 points and a fine for failing to stop, Thats what happened when i reported damage to my car
many years ago.
He didnt know he should report damage done to someones car? His insurance is about to get
astronomical.
Might lose his licence, Have to take his test again. 6 points in 1st 2 years still apply?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Still does yes, and I hope that it is the outcome.0 -
He may have a defence to the careless drive they usually include on the 172. But not the fail to stop and report. Has if returned the paperwork naming himself as the driver?
Looking like he's going to be a provisional licence holder again.0 -
I hate the way people think that hitting your car in any form in the car park is ok. Mine has two sets of scratches on it incurred this way and both times no note was left. I get so angry!0

OP for your nephews and your information you must report rtcs to the police and not supermarket customer services.0

What a tool. I absolutely hate people like this.
I just got a new car and literally live in fear when I go to the supermarket because there are so many people like this around.
Let's hope the police let him have it.0 -

Unfortunately offering any advice other than telling him to either remain silent or tell the truth will land that adviser with perverting the course of justice.
