yeh most of the people in my class have kids, yeh in evenings but they get alot more time and longer deadlines. plus nursing is a kind of its own where u cant just do evening classes to be a nurse
also OLDERNOTWISER wat u just said is what student nurses do. we work full time on placement plus work more hours for a part job and doing essays and studying for exams with kids. plus worrying if you will get a job at the end of it. much harder!!!2018 wins: Scottish weekend break, london weekend break and hotel chocolat hamper0 -
"£4375 maintenance loan, £3065 student loan, £3250 maintenance grant, plus NHS bursary/associated expenses on top"
For NHS courses you don't get the grant.
It's currently means tested bursary + maintenance loan which is a set amount of either around 1,800 if with parents, 2500 the rest of the country and over 3,000 if in London.
As from next year there will be a grant, but that will be £1,000 for everyone
i am totally confused now. if i have an NHS bursary they reduce the maintenance loan amount too, plus i cant apply for the maintenance grant. does this mean overall the amount is still the same, the money just comes from a different area, or does this mean my entitlement would be lower?
the finance officer stated that anyone with an income under £25k would be entitled to about £11k in loans/grants and NHS would pay tuition fees, which caused quite a few rolling of eyes in the room from the 18yr old's parents who earned above this, whereas the low income, mature students were pleasantly surprised.

have you actually checked the NHS bursary and student finance loans website to see what your estimated income from loans and bursaries is likely to be?
I would be very surprised if it is anywhere near the 11K your finance officer stated - is it possible he might have included the NHS tuition fees into that amount?0 -

ok, just completed the NHS bursary calculator and it says im entitled to just over £8k for the 30wks
if i then add on the reduced rate maintenance loan of £2.5k, id be getting £10.5k
or is this all still wrong?
i dont think im the only person who has been quoted these figures, as the majority of people on the Access Course im doing, were all surprised at how much money we would be getting. Especially, as most of us had delayed returning to education, as we thought we couldnt afford it

hello all,
im just about to start my nursing degree next week and I will speak to the course organisers about my bursary etc. I have previously completed an AHP degree for 3 years and graduated in 2009. (This degree was not nursing related). Since then I have worked full time, which I now have to give up, so I can pursue the nursing degree. I now decided to go back to train as a nurse. During my time working I managed to save most of my income. I am single and live with my parents.
I have two questions which I am really eager to know the answer to, I cant wait until next week! does the fact that I previously received a bursary affect my chances of getting another one?
also, will my savings count against me when they assess me for the bursary-or is it purely assessed against parents income?
I have read the NHS BSA site and i am just a little confused on the matter-does anyone on here have experience of this?
I really appreciate your help all!0 -

I believe the bursary calculator only works properly for the diploma course, which is non-means tested. The degree course is means tested and you apply to student finance for the reduced rate loan of £2324 (2011 figures).
I started doing the degree in Sept 2011. I did the calculator and it said I would be entitled to approx £11,000. When my bursary actually came through I got less than that and the loan. Only the loan is repayable.
And a nursing degree is over 45 weeks, not 30.0 -

All I can think is that the 11k he told you about includes the average 8k to cover uni fees as well which goes straight to the university and you wouldn't see. I'm currently applying to nursing degree courses and our tutor went through uni fees, loans and bursaries with us the other day and I think I'll be lucky to get 4-5k even though I won't be earning anythingMarch £5 a day challenge - £48.56/£1550 -

im not doing nursing, im applying for radiography which is a 30 week course. i thought the bursary calculator worked the other way, in that it doesnt show diploma funding?
I think its the means testing which is upping my entitlement
as OH is on min wage and we have 3 children, everything i have looked at, puts us on max entitlement

Ahhhhhh you have three children which means you get an extra grant per child although I cant remember how much that will probably be whats bumping your funding up I imagine.March £5 a day challenge - £48.56/£1550 -
If you have available space around the outside of your house like a driveway, a designated car parking space or garage, you could rent the space to someone with a caravan or boat or car etc, you charge them per week or month for using the space and this gives you extra money. I know people who do this and use a disclaimer if anything happens to the vehicle, basically if anything happens to it its not their problem!! And hey presto extra money for nothing!
Also when you have your baby remember to claim the extra part of your bursary for the child/dependants grant. Also if you like cosmetics you can sell Avon or !!!!!!!! or such... its amazng how much you can make on this if you could be bothered and especially if your on placement as you will be regular customers for a few weeks and while your working the hubby can deliver and collect!0
