Options
Hiya
Am a second year student nurse in need of extra money. NHS bursary is rubbish 5k a year, have a mortgage of 100k, and working a a HCA in the hospitals doesnt pay very well and very stressful to say the least. Any ideas of what i can do to make extra money. I posted this on another site and got replies from photographers enquiring about !!!!!!/glamour modelling....NO WAY!!Im not THAT desperate.. So if anyone has anyone sensible ideas they will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Can you rent out a room (or rooms)? This would also enable you to split bills as well as having income.

Don't give up on the HCA shifts; apart from earning extra money, the experience will boost your CV which will help you get a job in 18 months' time. This could be vital if there are still job shortages in the NHS when you graduate. You might as well learn to manage the stress now as it won't be going away when you're a qualified nurse!

Have you got your council tax discount ? it will be a minimum of 25% (if their are two adults)
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

You get a 25% discount if there is only one person in the household. If all members of a household are students then no council tax is payable.

I was pointing out its a minimum of 25% discount that she will get, ( I work in Council Tax), this applies if one adult is a student and the other adult in the property is not disregarded from Council Tax.

If all the adults in the property are students then the property is exempt (Class N) .

If their are more than 2 adults in the property who are not students then no discount/exemption can be given.

  • Have you registered with the Nursing Bank within the hospital or tried the agency BMA or equivilent?

With the job I am doing at the moment we are always asked about 'bank' work and there is always extra shifts going to cover leave, sickness and weekends. Several Nurses inc HCA/NA I know do bank work and also some work in the Nursing Homes on a weekend to boost their income.

    I hope this helps.

You may work in Council Tax but your first post wasn't very clear. Between us I think we've covered it.

i know its not relevant and i'm not having a go, but speaking as a student teacher, i wish i 'only' had a £5k bursary that didn't have to be paid back..unlike my loans
    Budget for Jan/Feb £240 per 4 weeks
Week 1-£52  Week 2-£75
    Week 3-£60.66 :confused:Week 4-£29.98 Total=£217.58
    w/c 18th Feb: £6.50

we dont get the holidays that other courses get though so we cant take on summer jobs im on placement throughout whole summer at the hopital
for extra money i have a babysitting job, im child branch and nannied b4 uni so kept up with jobs like that, nursery work when i can.

the only discount i have found as a homeowner is the ctax discount, we get 25 percent off as hubby works
  • Also, because we get a bursary it cuts us out of getting loads of other help because people assume it is enough to live on when it isn't.
Wildly my mind beats against you, yet the soul obeys. :heartpuls

like i said, i wasn't having a go, but i get NO help whatsoever, i do however have time off in the summer when i could get ork-if any were available, so i am in a better position in that way..i still think tho that the bursary that you receive puts you in a better position than a student teacher as it is unearned income that we do not get in any form at all
