Nursing is degree only from September 2012, so they won't have the option of the higher bursary that comes with the diploma anymore.

I quite agree - my son is currently in his 2nd year at Liverpool studying Radiotherapy - he gets £2400 bursary to live on
he is in uni from 9-5 most days and on placement in Manchester for long periods of time ( currently 6 weeks)
so he has to pay rent on his accommodation in Liverpool AND for hospital accommodation whilst he is on placement
so far he has spent almost £700 on accommodation for Hospital placement and although we have claimed it back from the NHS Bursary people we STILL have not received a penny
a £5000 bursary would GREATLY help him financially as he is unable to get part time work due to Uni lectures and then having to leave Liverpool to go to Manchester every 8 weeks

It does seem unfais that Nursing bursaries are better paid than others.
But if your son was doing a nursing degree he would also be income assessed so would not get the £5,000 bursary.

But his father is unemployed and I am disabled - we are surviving on my husbands small occupational pension of £6,000 per annum
the OP stated her husband was in employment - so how come the Op gets £5k and my son only £2400 K?

Currently, nursing students doing the diploma get a higher non means tested amount than those doing the degree. This is a hangover from the days when nurse training was far more 'on the job' and more like an apprenticeship with a salary.

This year's diploma entrants are the last.

Has he applied for his non means tested student loan of £2324 p/a?

I think OP is doing diploma so bursary is not means tested. I think your son should get more if your living on £6k per annum. Have you applied for any benefits, if your husband is unemployed due to disability I am sure there must be benefits he could claim, DLA perhaps? Sorry just realised it is you who is disabled, have you applied for DLA? Is your husband entitled to jsa?

I know this thread is old, but as a follow-up...my daughter did qualify. She did bank shifts and waitressing to supplement her income! All the hard work paid off and she now works in London earning a very comfortable wage. And she met Dr Fluffy!

I don't think anybody believes that student nurses have it easy but there are plenty of people who work full time, study for a degree in the evenings and also raise a family (sometimes on their own).
