does the Windows Vista come on a CD/DVD for the Aldi model - or do you just get a recovery disc. is it OEM version and if so does that mean you cannot install vista from scratch? for example if you wanted to upgrade the harddrive to a bigger one could you still re-install Vista?

    thanks

    MUCH BETTER DEAL HERE NOW

    Emachines E4064 £269.99 @ Comet

    Intel Dual Core 2.6ghz
Intel Board with 4 SATA & 4 IDE Connectors
    1Gb RAM
    200Gb HDD
    16x DVD R/RW
Full Windows Media Centre with Remote and TV Tuner Board
    Vista Free Ugrade

Only 1 Yr Warranty, but is a really nice machine, and a lot better value than the Aldi one I think.

    hey Vicky.....

its a good spot on that pc you found

Can I ask however, where you found out that it definately has SATA? Also where it says that the vista upgrade is free? The comet site just says vista update is available - which would imply it costs, and the emachines website itself says nothing about serial ata.

I was considering stripping out a very old case and buying just a mobo, ram, psu and cpu of similar spec as the aldi model without all the extra bells and whistles, which in itself would have cost about £190 delivered (based on the 2.8ghz - so prob a bit less if 2.66). So basically for about 90quid more with delivery, I'd be getting an extra 200gb SATA, a new case, spare dvdwriter, hopefully genuine vista license, TV Tuner card, and a lot less stress :)

    cheers,
    Tuck

just to add....I dont suppose you know if the ram in it is 533 or 400 do you? :)

Only found out when I opened it up to put in a 2nd hard drive and found 4 SATA connectors on the Mbd as well asw the IDE ones!

As for the Vista upgrade, it comes with Windows MCE so qualifies for the upgrade you just go to the EMachines site once you have your PC and enter the COA from windows and machine serial number + send an email scan of the purchase receipt and they send you Vista Premium on DVD (Costs £9.99 in shipping!)

    And the RAM is 533

Basically its a very nice cheap machine, I could not buy the bits for the price taking into account the OS and full MCE Kit with Remote IR extenders etc..

    Hope that helps.

  • cool thanks - I'm pretty set on ordering this in the morning - or maybe in a few hrs :D

Can I ask if the HD supplied with the pc is a SATA?

Also, going by the pic - the dvd writer looks like it might be one of them in-car type - where you push the disc directly in? Or is that just a really thin tray on the picture?

Lastly (honest guv ;)), With this vista upgrade disc. Would I be right in thinking if you want to do a fresh install at some point - the only way would be to install the supplied factory image of MCE, and THEN run the vista update every time you want to do that - or does it allow you to in the future just install Vista fresh, formats, warts and all?

    cheers,
    Tuck

E Machines computers have a very bad reliability track record, I would buy the Medion with the 3 year warranty.

Comet offer 3 yrs. at home warranty for £80, so you can have that as well and still be cheaper than the Aldi unit.

  • Hi

    With regards the HDD

Its IDE on 1 of the IDE ports (DVD Writer is on the other), both have 2 channel cables so you can fit 2 more IDE drives without buying extra cables

There are 4 spare SATA ports.

as for the DVD Writer its a standard LG pop out draw, nice little DVD/R 16x (What you are seeing in thep icture is a thin black plastic strip under the DVD tray,

As for the vista upgrade disc cant comment as its not arrived yet, (Got an email from them last night to say the order was validated and should ship in 5 to 7 days). I assume it will be the standard VISTA upgrade pack so will need to see either an installed Windows MC or put a Windows disc in the drive to check you have it, but pure speculation till the package arrives.

    Cheers

Medion have appalling Customer Service in my opinion so even though there is a 3yr warranty, good luck to anyone trying to contact Medion for a warranty issue.

There is a full discussion on the merits of the eMachine on HUKD here

Seems an excellent price for that spec.
