Not a huge bargain at £400 these days IMHO.

They have a Medion 8818 PC for sale in the new Manchester City Centre Aldi Store for £549.99, The store has only opened recently and this PC has been behind a glass display since they opened, dont know what the spec is on this as they dont have any leaflets available when I asked this afternoon.

Found a review on it here ..

Had the onsite warranty used twice in 3 years (Both cases fan went on Video card). apart from that faultless performance for 3 years.

I had the same problem with the Video Card fan breaking, I replaced it with a Arctic Cooling fan and Ive not had any problems since and its quieter too, really easy to fit too with 6 years warranty.

Not to forget of course, that it comes with Vista as well. Whether that's a good thing remains to be seen, I suppose!
  • This is a link to the spec. Its in German but you can get the gist!

Apparently it is going to be £399.00 according to info elsewhere.

It doesn't have any Firewire Ports, so not the best buy on the planet, still not bad value/

Older is not always worse, The new Duo Cores are mainly slower

And no mention of a monitor because like all Aldi PCs there is not one, Base unit Only!

Can I just clarify something you said.

There are currently 3 different "types" of dual core Intel processors (excluding servers).

    Pentium-4 D
    Core Duo
    Core 2 Duo

The newest ones are the Core 2 Duo, which perform EXTREMELY well, and are pretty much the fastest you can buy. The Core (1) Duo was a bit of a disappointment, and the P4D (which this PC is) is quite good, but nowhere near as good as the Core 2 Duo.

Re the Core Duo being a disappointment...I've just bought one off ebay. Scan's price is £250, I paid jjust £80 delivered last week (boxed brand new!)...it's a really *really* good processor, low power, high performance. So while Intel's core duo processors may have been a disappointment at their initial price point, for £80 you can't go wrong!

Only a rumour at the moment.

If it is £399 then I won't bother, £349 I might be tempted and if it's £299 then I will be queuing on the 15th.
