The dangerous wind this week. Self-help

Its getting bad here already and its really dark - panto cancelled, girls devasted. Got half the parents moaning on the councils facebook page that its just a bit of wind and kids are too mollycuddled - red alert, but its just wind  Think it shows that although Scotland is used to wind, its nothing like this one. Dreading picking girls up at noon. Will make nice pot of soup for us coming in.0

Schools are closed so kids are happy. I nipped out at 8.30 to get milk and rolls and it wasn't to bad but now it is getting a bit wild.
Loft hatch is rattling and I am really scared the garden furniture is going to go over, think i might nip out an move what i can into the shed.Feb 2012 Grocery Challenge £200/£4.00

Just spoken to family near Dunoon and they have said the wind speeds have been pretty bad over night and this morning with the gusts beginning to buffet a bit more now but it's not constant.0

East Lothian schools will be closing at noon.
Hubby has gone off to work in Stirling(!) but has taken my big car, not his wee Polo. Also an overnight bag...he's got friends up there so if it's bad in the afternoon he won't drive home, he'll just stay the night. He's got two Union meetings scheduled so he felt he must go.
I've made a pot of soup and more bread, got the candles, torches and battery camping lanterns out and charged up the phones. (And DSs!) And I know where the camping stove is downstairs, and the gas. I'm not so worried about our roof as it's a 1930's build roof structure and has stood firm through the last three gales since the slates were renewed, plus we had it inspected a few months ago. We do get the full crossways brunt of the wind though and our building is three stories high. We're the windbreak for the whole street, almost! So I've locked the windows (it helps stop the rattle) and shut the curtains on the windward side.
I'm more concerned that the power will go off than structural damage tbh. So I'm off to get some laundry done and have a shower, also I'm going to put the CH on this morning so as to get the house warm. A few extra hours won't cost too much and if the combi-boiler does switch off (electronic ignition) and least it won't be too baltic.Val.0 -

I'm with you there, the more people that can be got off the roads later, the better for the emergency services who'll be busy enough without being hindered by people being out unneccesarily.
Just south of Glasgow, went to shops about 20 minutes ago and it wasn't too bad at all, a stiff breeze I'd say, but just in the last 5 minutes it's definitely getting worse. Strathclyde Uni is open but has cancelled all classes and advised students not to come in, DDs stupid college are "open as normal", but she's emailed them and said I won't let her go:rotfl:0 -

V. true, I hate to think of the traffic from everyone doing the school run at 3/3:30 to people coming home from work if they hadn't shut. Especially since I really can't see the Forth/Tay Bridges staying open with the gusts that are predicted.
