  • JoJo - I've often wondered that too as sometimes our winds are stronger than hurricane ones reported - it's something to do with how they originate I think.

Getting really gusty / howly here now.

Schools are shutting at Noon - so 1/2 the office will have to disappear meaning those of us left will have to work late.....

Getting windy out there now. Still no idea yet if out school is open or not, council website seems to have crashed as I cant access it.

I am sure the school will be closed as Glasgow Council has confirmed all their schools are closed and we are just outside their area.

Not looking forward to today :(

Not even in the red zone and got blown of my feet yesterday. Good luck everyone, stay safe xxx

Hurricanes are a specific type of storm (tropical cyclone forming over the sea then moving inland) rather than just winds over a certain speed which is why they say hurricane force winds rather than hurricanes

I know - she showed the rotation over the Atlantic before she said it, over the blue bit that is blanked out on weather forecasts over here.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

All schools in ayrshire (most of the west!) are closed all day, if that's any help?

Really quite windy outside right now - and dark! Much darker than it usually is.

Fife Schools are shutting at lunch - nothing like a bit of warning for working parents - so I shall probably have a house full

    Before High Winds

    • Secure loose objects such as ladders, garden furniture and anything else that could damage windows.
    • Close and securely fasten doors and windows, particularly those on the windward sides of the house.
    • Secure especially large doors e.g. garages.
    • Park vehicles in a garage if available. Otherwise keep vehicles clear of trees and buildings.
    • Make sure your loft trap door is secure.
    • Ensure tall structures such as chimneys, TV aerials and tall trees are structurally sound.

    During High Winds

    • Stay indoors as much as possible.
    • If you do go out, try not to walk or shelter close to buildings and trees.
    • Keep away from the sheltered side of boundary walls and fences - if these structures fail they will collapse on this side. Do not go outside to repair damage during the storm.
    • If possible, enter and leave your house through doors on the sheltered side, closing them behind you.
    • Open internal doors only as needed.

    After High Winds

    Consider the following:
    • Be careful not to touch any electrical or telephone cables that have been blown down or are still hanging.
    • Do not walk too close to walls, buildings and trees as they could have been weakened.
    • Make sure that any vulnerable neighbours or relatives are safe and help them make arrangements for any repairs.
    from the AGMA website.

Do please stay safe, lovely people. I'll be keeping you in my prayers today.

I live nearly 1000ft up and its always windy here at the best of times. But one good thing is that our terrace of cottages is gable-end on to the west, and is single storey. The power will go off cos it always does. The chickens will have to take their chances - I explained to them its a hurricane and they have to hide in the basement and take sandwiches down there but they didnt seem interested. :D Still dark here and its 9am.
  • Hatches getting firmly battened here! Dark and blustery already and we're not supposed to get the worst till this afternoon.

Quite relieved schools are closing early - I wasn't keen on OH walking home from work right in the middle of it. Always reminds me of a girl in my school who ended up in hospital after a tree fell on her during severe weather.
