God is that all she has to worry about. Okay some houses can look tacky if not done right. I think the main thing is now not to have them on very late but as you dont I cant see what she has to complain about

    Here's an off-the-wall solution:

    - your family loves the lights, but can't see them from inside your house

    - your neighbour can see the lights from inside her house, but doesn't love them

    - swap houses!!

    - that way your family can see the lights (and hopefully still love them); your neighbour doesn't have to look at them... Result all round!

On a serious note, that does sum up the trouble with outside decorations.

The decorating family 'loves' them - but can't see them. The neighbours can see them, but don't always 'love' them.

So, if the decorating family can't see them, but for various reasons 'needs to know' that they are there, why not offer to have them switched on for a shorter period of time?

    compromise ..
  • I totally understand. We have put up with early morning opera doorstep cleaning missions, her three yappy dogs barking and barking for hours on end in the garden. We've not complained about not being able to get our babies to sleep because her latest lodger is fixing his car on the road just under the bedroom window with his techno blaring out at ten/eleven pm whilst she hands him cups of tea knowing we have young kids upstairs. We only ever asked very politely twice to access/leave our drive when her sons car was left parked across it.We drop in a xmas card each year and the kids gave her some chocs last year.So she has shown little or no consideration towards us but STILL we feel bad about putting a few lights on our own house!I'll sleep on it but honestly feel she's just moaning for the sake of moaning:o

That is all very frustrating and I can understand your reluctance to yield to her complaint.

Well, you've clearly made your decision, you've rolled out the emotional heavy artillery that didn't make it into the first post, and you're going to keep those lights on the outside of the house, even though you can't see them when you're indoors [unless you have a periscope? That would be a novel addition]

So, I'm not quite sure why you posted in the first place - but I am entirely positive that the thread will run and run.

    good work!

I think your house sounds fun. Your neighbour is probably complaining cos she is lonely and bitter at this time of year. I hate it when miserable grumps act like this.

Ignore her. Unless she is an exibitionist, she would have been drawing her curtains anyway
The opposite of what you know...is also true
  • Ok here's the front of the house. Will get a full pic 2mro night.So..is it majorly OTT??

    That isn't excessive.

Is it the blue lights she has a problem with?

I was expecting Father Christmas lit up half way up the wall and brightly coloured, but unless you have other lights we cannot see from this pic, I don't see why it should cause her a problem.

A compromise is called for I think. How about putting the lights on from 4 - 7pm for example.

Why is everyone assuming that OP can't see her own lights? We can see our lights, they're in a tree in our front garden. OP, can you see your lights?
Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.

To the left there is a father christmas plus two other lights but like I said my car obscures the majority. Can't take a full pic now as they're off,it's raining and it's 1.30 am so would look a bit odd out there with my huge bump taking pics:p Will take a full pic tomorrow night.I was speaking to hubby earlier and wondering what she'll do when next door to her switch on their mega display tomorrow night. At least 2 big flashing "ornaments" will be on the porch roof right under her top windows if the past two years are anything to go by.
