I'm amazed at them complaining too, but they have, so bumpmakesfour needs to deal with it as best she can.

Without doubt. Pudding costumes for example?:D

This is giving me ideas - a few flashing led lights to brighten up this years snowdog, perhaps?

It's not been a problem in previous years, but this year he's moved where he's got them. I can now catch the lights of one out of the corner of my eye when I'm sat on my sofa - even though I have vertical blinds and curtains (admittedly not the thickest, plushest curtains).

It's really, really irritating. I asked him if he'd moved them and he instantly took the huff about it, that's why I was wondering if you were my neighbour. I didn't even ask him to change them, I just asked what was different.

That's a good point - as were the other points about "has anything changed?".

I have no interest in decorating the outside of my house, but quite enjoy admiring (be it in a 'good' way or in a 'jaw-dropped' way) the efforts of others.

This year, I am being driven slowly demented by the lights on the house across the back garden :(.

They assault my eyes when I'm in the kitchen; ambush me when I'm going upstairs; and have lost any positive factor they might once have had.

All of this, mind you, through curtains (kitchen) and blinds (stairs). The light just finds it way through, to attack my poor optical nerves.

If it was the house opposite us at the front, and we were getting that light pollution when watching the telly, or trying to sleep, it would be unbearable - so I do sympathise with the OP's neighbour.

The difference this year is that the neighbour in between has chopped down a few (!) trees, and demolished the old extension. That means that more of the light is reaching our house. By next year, the new extension should be in place, so that should cut out the Christmas light pollution.

My sympathies do actually lie with the OP's neighbour. As someone said earlier, the OP's view of the lights is very different from the neighbour's view(literally speaking).

    It's worth bearing in mind.

Never got the craze of outside lights personally.. what's the point you don't see them.......however living on a close with 6 houses who do light up and only me who doesn't I am clearly in the minority :)

Would never moan about the blackpool illuminations I get though...........its christmas after all :)

But its not though, is it? It is early December, or at the most, you could call it advent which, as far as I know, is not usually celebrated with illuminated Father Christmases. Christmas is December 25th.

I hate lights on houses and think they are very tacky. I'd be miffed if one of my neighbours put them up, too, but thankfully we all seem to have some taste around here ;).

Your house, your rules?! Why has she not said something sooner?

I think it sounds nice, although I'm not a big fan of characters, in fact we have neighbours opposite who have characters and I don't really like them but they're not on my house so they don't bother me. It does annoy me a little that they've had them up for a month lol but I don't plan on saying anything BECAUSE IT'S THEIR HOUSE!!!

Don't let her make you feel bad about it, if your children enjoy it then that's what matters. However, do you think it's going to impact your friendship, you don't want to start a war and might want to have a think about how to respond....or you could just do nothing and hope she was having an off day.

I always thought Christmas and good taste were contradictory - the tackier the better in our family. Unless you're religious (and from the number in church last week, that's not many people), Christmas is for kids and family. Kids, family and tasteful just don't go together.

lol and there's me thinking I was a bah humbug ......christmas to me is not just the day in fact the couple of weeks build up is more fun to me than the actual day.

I don't think other peoples lights are tacky at all in fact I really enjoy them when Im strolling with my fluffball in the evening.......I just don't want any of my own cos I can't see them - and I also wouldnt want to be kept awake by bright lights from a neighbours house - thin curtains I guess

I would consider myself a wee bit snobby if I considered christmas lights to be tasteless but hey you obviously live in the right place:cool:
