When dealing with a dispute, only deal with the facts. Your opinion on why the seller wants to return an item is of no consequence to the dispute. It's difficult but you need to put yourself in the buyers position. Condition and value are subjective. If you had paid this much money for an item and when you received it were disappointed for any reason, what would you do?
Regarding the dispute, I have sympathy with you and appreciate your position, but as others have said you run the risk that the buyer returns something else and you then don't have the money or the ring. Many sellers will not sell very expensive items on eBay for this reason.
So now, what is the ring worth? and how much did you expect it to sell for? It may seem counter intuitive but it may be better to refund the £100 the buyer is asking for to get the ring repaired. This way you still have £700+ and no risk of being scammed with something else being sent back to you. I realise this is not what you would want to do, but you need to look at the position you are currently in and what option carries the least risk going forward.
I don't know how a partial refund would work with regard to the dispute, but you need to be clear that if you do this it is a full and final settlement of the dispute

Thank you myonlypost.
That does make a lot of sense to me... Your right. I guess if it really is a scam then they will continue to request a full refund instead of the supposed cost to repair.0 -
does the fault she's complaining of, show in the pictures you emailed to the buyer?0

it's a shame i cant put the photos up on here but i looked at the pictures again and i cant see what she's complaining of showing in them. They were sent from my googlemail account to her e-mail account in large file format so almost fills computer screen when file opened.0

If I had to take a guess I would say this is someone who on receipt doesn't think the ring is worth what they have paid, hence the £100 refund request. If you make the refund I doubt very much they will have the repair carried out.
Further to my earlier post maybe consider offering a smaller refund, say £50, "towards the cost of repair".It may sometimes seem like I can't spell, I can, I just can't type0 -
I just don't know what to do for the best. I have been using e-bay for years and i have never encountered this problem before.0

You're probably right, but it took her 4 weeks to decide that.0 -

The latest message from the buyer
Buyer's message:
"That is really ridiculous about all the excuses you made!Indeed it is a tough time now for everyone and that's why i don't mind to buy a second hand diamond ring on ebay for my wedding rather than buying a new one in stores, i understand you need the money for your baby but you cannot cheat people for it like this! it's not easy to make money for anybody! i don't mind to spend such big amount money on a wedding ring if it has good condition and especially knew it's already cheaper than those new in stores, but there's something really fishy about your ring and it is really not as right as you showed and described in your listing and email! i was bit wondering that since you've already taken such nice pictures of the ring, why didn't you just simply add them on the listing to attract more bidders?! But now i think i know why!The diamond specialist who checked the ring works in Christie's Auction House in Amsterdam so his confirmation is fully reliable! and i remembered that when i was trying to get the placement of prongs fixed by the local jewellers, i've also been told by them that the prongs cannot be fixed as they're connected with the diamond so only once people move the diamond the prongs can be moved too. That's also the reason why i started to be wondering if the diamond is the same one as stated on the certificate. Anyway, i agree that it will be the best way to let ebay to make the final decision here as we can't make an agreement. We'll see then. "0
