Buying a car (eBay)

Just won a bid for a car, before I placed a bid I told the seller I only wanted it if it was mot (at my expense). He agreed this. Just arranging to pay the deposit now, do I need to write up a contract before transfering the £? Not talking £1,000's here but want to make sure I'm covered, in case the mot bit goes wrong.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

  • Depends what you've agreed with reference to the MOT. Are you paying for the repairs as well? Also if you are will it work out more expensive than you want to pay for the car?

Who pays if it fails ?

  • I'd expect him to MOT it and then if it passed I'd turn up with sale price + MOT test cost.
If it failed or the cost of getting it through the MOT was high, i'd do my Forrest Gump
  • That's the plan, I'm not interested in any repairs hence I asked him before I bid to mot it for me. Will message him now (paying the deposit) saying this as well. His words on the ad are "it'll fly through", so surely shouldn't be a problem - if what he's saying is true. We'll soon see!
  • Would this be the one?

    Listed as spares or repair.

Ask to see MOT before paying deposit or pay in full after you have inspected the car and documents.

Only a muppet or someone pulling a fast one would try to sell a car with no MOT.

  • Yes it's that one, because he's listed it as that I asked him to mot it before I agree to the sale. If he's not prepared to do that I won't be sending him a penny. Also said "subject to hpi check" etc. No answer yet, after prompt replies when talking about the £!

He is maybe wondering why you want to HPI the car when he's stated it was a Cat C? Shouldn't tell you more than you already know, but for a £3 text check it won't hurt
  • Seems strange that he's selling as a spares or repair as it's got no MOT, but he's more than happy to stick it through an MOT if you pay for it.

If he's got no problems MOTing it for the winning bidder, why not MOT it and sell it with 12 months ticket.
  • I'll be honest, I'm used to just turning up. Handing over the £ and driving off. Never had a car off eBay before, was advised to do a full check for milage, theft reports etc? So many car check sites out there - unsure which to use!

Edit - that's why I put a cheeky £450 bid on, figured I'd pay £500 max for it for a full 12 month mot. If I'm not getting the right vibe from this I'll be on my heels so to speak.
