It's not really about working harder though, is it? The reason Wayne Rooney can command £150,000 a week is because he's one of about twenty people in the entire world who can do his job. Okay, the same isn't true of CEOs and Directors, but the same theory kind of applies, which is that they presumably have the unique skills and experience to do the job they are in. I'd probably agree that a lot of very highly paid businessmen don't 'deserve' the money they are on, I'm just making the point that working hard shouldn't determine your salary. You'd hope that every single employee in the organisation works as hard as each other. The uniqueness of their job (hopefully, and generally) then sets the market rate for their position.0 -
The only poll I seen regarding support for the strikes suggests the majority were in favour of them. As for hard working it seems a fair few on here manage to post throughout the day on here so I wonder how many actual hard working people there are? My wifes a teacher is lucky to get 30 mins due the day to eat something let alone spend a fair amount of the day surfing the net as many seem to do.
and yet there are teachers on mse nonetheless.
btw....I don't even pretend to work hard: I don't:)0 -

80 hours at minimum wage is roughly £25k and no doubt a good many do.
Question is whether the £250k person is worth 10 times more.
The answer may well be yes in most cases but I know many in the 100K+ arena who are no better than people at £30k."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

I've just used figures illustratively.
You're telling me that someone on 250K a year is working 10 times harder than someone doing 80 hours a week for 1/10 of that.
There are always going to be people, bosses, who get paid for the job they do, rather than the hours they put in. I'll give a classic example in the Dragons Den that's exactly what they do, they invest in other people and leverage off their time to make more money from products which they believe are going to be the next big thing.0 -
I haven't read the thread because I'm watching Channel4 news
Channel4 news is showing consecutive reports, the first of which ridicules the reaction to Clarkson's comments, and the second of which reports the continuing harrassment of John Terry over his racist remarks
I shall read the thread from beginning to end after 8pm

If you look at the backgrounds of the Dragons they were hard workers before they made their millions. They also took risks including suffering bankruptcy - most people don't take risks which is why they stay as employees.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I don't care what he gets paid if people are daft enough to help fuel him thats up to them.
Except that is Barclays find millions to promote the Premiership but continues to fund a paltry dividend. It no doubt washes it's face for the free advertising...."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

And a number of people take those risks for 2 reasons in IMO.
1.) Because the have nothing to lose
2.) They have background wealth to fall back on"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....
