The line about train suicides is harder to get away with on a prime time chit chat show; that sort of black humour is quite common amongst commuters, but I think you need to be clear about your audience in that sort of territory.
I was watching the programme when it went out live and I was really surprised that it wasn't that part that got the complaints. It was by far the most outrageous of the two statements he made, even if he was just being sarcastic. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Rubbish TV presenter makes rubbish joke.
Anyone would think it's coming up to Christmas and he's got a book to sell. Maybe Unison are on a commission.
I hope they do sack him. Maybe they could put something on in place of Top Gear - something about cars would make a change.
Hasnt his comments now been proved to be previously cleared and encouraged by the BBC? I think they were trying to spice up a boring program, much like the one person each year in 'i'm a celebrity' who suddenly turns on people for no apparent reason (Pat).....
Everything seems staged on TV these days....0 -
Former_Spice wrote: »Ridicouse figures, average teachers pay is only £25,000 and the most anyone can currently retire on is half that and that's assuming they started work as a teacher as a teenager or on their twentieth birthday.
The government has been defending its claim that the average teacher in England and Wales earns £34,000, which prompted complaints from strikers last week.
Sceptics argued that with the maximum salary for a classroom teacher being £34,281, the average could not possibly be so high.
A spokeswoman for Schools Minister Jim Knight has clarified that he was including the pay for advanced skills teachers and head teachers, deputies and assistant heads.
Even so, the average for classroom teachers is some £32,200 - which is more than many people realised.
Mr Knight told BBC News on the eve of the strike: "I think parents are bewildered because they hear that the average teacher earns about £34,000."
In a briefing to journalists sent out by his department in advance of the strike, he was quoted as saying the same thing.
Neither on air nor in the briefing was it clear that he was including in this calculation head teachers, deputies and assistants, and advanced skills teachers - who are all paid according to different salary scales.
On Monday, his department was able to point only to a figure for the average teacher's salary in March 2006, when it stood at £31,434.
A spokeswoman pointed out that it would now be higher. Teachers had a 2.5% pay rise in September, which if reflected in the average would take it to about £32,200 at present.
Reward
For teachers there are two scales. They start on a main scale on a salary of £20,133. This rises for each of the next five years to £29,427.
Any annual pay rises in percentage terms are in addition to those automatic salary increments.
Once on the top of the main scale teachers can apply to cross a "threshold" onto an upper pay scale,
This was introduced in 2000 as part of a drive by the new Labour government to reward good teachers who chose to stay in the classroom rather than move into school leadership.
The original plan was scaled back. What remains is a three-tier upper scale, on the top of which a teacher can earn £34,281.
Responsibilities
A number of factors boost the average. One is that, because of its size, many teachers work in London, and they get paid more as a result.
Costs associated with living there mean three salary uplifts have been devised for inner London, outer London and a "fringe" area which extends well outside the capital.
A teacher on the top of the main scale in inner London earns £33,936 and on the upper scale, £41,004.
Classroom teachers who take on significant extra responsibilities, for example as subject co-ordinators, may be awarded a Teaching and Learning Responsibility (TLR) payment.
These range £2,364 to £11,557 a year.
Another factor is that teaching is an ageing profession.
Many of those on rallies during last Thursday's strike by members of the National Union of Teachers were young teachers struggling to pay off student debts. But they are unrepresentative.
A significant number of teachers do leave after only a few years - fed up, the unions say, with the workload and bureaucracy and with the misbehaviour of some pupils.
But most have been in post long enough to be on the higher salaries. Indeed a looming potential problem is a bulge in the numbers due to retire.
On top of this most teachers choose to take advantage of the huge tax breaks involved in "buying extra years service" using salary sacrifice0 -
Dont get me started on flipping teachers!
I dont watch the one show so missed it
But did see it in full and agree taken out of context, irony.
So I posted on my fb outraged about being outrages cited clarkson thing as another example of labour yet again calling for someones resignation:mad:
It was on c4 news and some daft union bloke was like what about the kids. personally if you let kids watch one show must be classed as chid cruelty!:rotfl:
The telegraph guy gave a very measured account on it and wrote good article.
Even the new statesman said unions looking particuarly silly and detracts from reason they were striking in 1st place!
I mean daft woman gping to the police -clarkson broken no law!
Last time I checked public sector workers are not a protected ethnic group!
Another bloke said hes going to seek legal advice?
How exactly does unison plan to pay for legal advice then lose.
Also unions are calling for instant dismissal no warnings, disiplinaries so much for fighting for employment rights seems only public sector workers get them!
Anyway back to my fb post started world war 3 sadly I was out.
Get back to find my teacher freind and sister arguing on fb wall!
Teacher how dare he im offended he should be sacked.
Sister arguing wasent serious you muppet, that clarkson having an opinion is exercising free speech just as much as striking is sort of form of free speech!
Does she accept this -does she hell!¬
We get the we hardworking public sector workers to which my sister says yes theres hardworking people in private on less salary and benefits than you-dident go down too well.
Now shes mad she pays her taxes and works whilst others like me stay at home to raise my kids ! But im not on benefits part from child benefit and my husband works 50+hours a week, we have 3kids , she has one and childcare soo pricey for 3 fulltime would be 500quid a week!
I argue that point that I paid taxes when working
i pay council tax, vat ect
hubby pays inmcome tax
that public sector workers not only ones paying in.
she pays in therefore shes entitled to the best
To quote loreal
Because im worth it!
Guess should be grateful shes not a secondary english teacher as irony and appropriate use of english language is lost on her!
In truth shes a
early years reception primary school teacher
whos just had year off with stress fully paid!
She has a pension.
she has 13weeks hols a year and very little childcare costs.
Sadly shes a single parent so gets lots tax credits yet shes having the cheek to have a pop at private sector.
I remember a conversation about how she hates her job and talking about sick leave as if its paid holiday.
She says some teachers play system especially if they close to retirement.
They go off with stress sometimes saying its work related
they get year full paid sick.
they go back for full week
then they go sick again as as they returned they get full pay sick leave again and then take early retirement!
Another freinds whos secondary science thinks its wrong that primary school teachers as they not as skilled, their jobs not as hard.
very pleased with teachers in my eldests school they dident strike!
Know a few people who teachers with kids and its a very flexible well paid job if you have kids.
When i was in primary my teachers dident have classroom assistants!
my freind says its fab shes never demaned herself cleaning paintbrushes.
I would argue their pay, conditions and benefits have increased over last 10years and they still not happy.
Anyway get the cant belive you agree public sector should be shot!
As I said dont share that veiw well dident until she rowed with me:rotfl:
I cant control jeremy clarkson I dont even know the bloke
Control my sister shes rude! nope shes allowed an opionion!
guess its exposed a freind as pychotic leftie will now avoid.
My sister who I never considered we agree are both quite right wing.
Just hoping dad doesnt read wall hes very pro labour.
did suggest asking sister to come see iron lady on her wall as thatcher our hero she knew how to deal with those pesky strikers might be too much!pad by xmas2010 £14,636.65/£20,000::beer:

KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON:D,Onwards and upward2013:)0 -
Perhaps teachers shouldn't be paid so much. Sometimes it seems like some people have received no education at all...0
-
I would suggest that some teachers earn too much and some too little.
Teaching in a sink inner city comp is a much tougher job than a nice home counties grammer. For some daft reason (due to the unions) they both earn the same. Salaries should be graded on how difficult it is to recruit.
This would also go for different subjects. There are arts grads lining up to get into teaching whereas it is very hard to get science graduates. I fail to see why they should get the same terms of employment.0 -
Maybe we should just get rid teachers and all those with kids should home school or pay private.0
-
Arn't many of the public sector pension still final(or near final) salary pensions.
SO average salaries are the wrong value to be using , it should be projected pensionable salaries.
Any half decent proffessional should be getting to the top of the salary bands/gradings by the time they retire.0 -
Apart from theft I never seen anyone get sacked and any of the companies I worked for not doing their job properly and these include drug addicts.
I know a private sector company who under redundancy arangements got rid of a fairly hard worker and kept an alcoholic simply because they declared themselves as such.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0
