He loves "the great hope of a messiah's birth", but doesn't actually believe in the messiah?! Does that make him hopeless...? :p

Not at at, it means he can enjoy the hope of other people and share the enthuiasm for a beautiful idea without feeling his own beliefs and opinion are threatened by other people's reality. :) Whether or not one is a Christian there is no doubt that there is beautiful art, muic and emotion centering around it, and particularly beautiful is nativity and Christmas. :)

parsnips and sprouts are not 'christmas food', they are vegetables that are currently in season.

Parsnips fair enough, but does anyone actually buy sprouts except for Christmas?

They had trolleys full of definite Christmas food, but it was just a casual observation meant to be vaguely humorous, no need to take it so seriously!

Ooh, yes, every week at this time of year as part of a roast dinner. Absolutely love them. Hated them with a passion as a child. not sure when the conversion happened!:D

Banning the word 'Christmas' wouldnt really be able to be enforced in a primary school i think. I mean, what are they going to do if a child wont stop saying the word???

    Dear Parent,

Your child said the word 'Christmas' three times today. Due to his blatent disregard for the school rules we have decided to suspend him from school until he has thought about his actions and apologised.

    Best regards

Oh, I see (sort of!) - it's just like the way that we adults can be enthusiastic about Father Christmas and the hope and promise of his overnight visit.

I'm with you there - sprouts are yummy throughout winter!

I've heard that, in recent years, the supermarkets have gradually been developing/growing sweeter, less-bitter varieties for the modern palate, so if you haven't had them for a while (or overcooked them before), why not give 'em another go?! How can anyone not like them, eh?

Maybe it's like spinach - boil it to a pulp and it can be horrible; steam it for a few seconds or have it raw as a salad ingredient and it's scrumptious!

Another sprout lover here. All my family are. A few years ago I nabbed one off my brother's plate on St Stephen's day and I'm lucky he talked to me for the rest of my visit. Yummy, yummy sprouts! :D

bleurgh to sprouts. I have one a year (and I do mean one single sprout) on Christmas day.

My mum loved them though, she'd eat them whenever they were available. But she also loved tripe.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

    Now spinach I love!

Maybe the sprout thing is psychological, I just associate them with childhood veg oppression and the dog getting 3 one year and emitting toxic fumes during the Queen's speech.
