School have banned the word "christmas"!!!

My daughter came home from school today and told me that the head has banned everyone from saying the word Christmas. It has to be replaced with "advent" I have called a couple of the the other mums and they have confirmed that this has been told to all the children. Are they allowed to do this? This school is currently on special measures and I feel like the head and teachers should be more concerned about educating the children and rather than wasting time being condescending and judgemental.
They have also banned Christmas cards but the are children are allowed to sign a class card if they make a payment for this.
Am I right to be annoyed by this or am I over reacting?

I would be concerned about the lack of basic knowledge there to be honest. Advent is the period leading up to Christmas, and is a religious event in itself. It's like the school saying they've banned the word Christmas, and are going to use Easter instead - it makes no sense.0

Has a letter come home to the parents to explain their reasoning? Are we talking primary or secondary school (not that it makes any difference really)
The mind boggles tho... and no I would be very annoyed too.0 -
They've BANNED christmas cards? And you can't even say the word?Isn't advent the period leading up to christmas anyway??Oh my gosh that is nuts!!
Has there been a letter sent out to the parents to inform them?I'd be likely to go in at home time tomorrow and hand every single teacher/TA/dinner lady/cleaner that I knew a christmas card..including the head.what a bloomin joke!Slightly mad mummy to four kidlets aged 4 months,6,7 and 8:D:D xx

No letter, I am thinking of sending a letter in myself tomorrow to ask about it. I am just wondering how to word it.
Its a catholic primary school. So I REALLY don't understand.

I used to work for a US company, and they always used the phrase 'Happy Holidays' which I hated. I always signed my emails this time of year 'Have a great Christmas' just for devilment!0

As it's a Catholic school are they maybe just being pedantic about which part of the year we're in? Technically this is now advent, and Christmas doesn't start until...well, Christmas lol.
Not that that makes the card decision any clearer.0 -
Is the area "multicultural"? I would just ignore it and send cards to whoever I liked. My child's overdoes the Jesus thing, but this seems too far the other way.Been away for a while.0

I now feel that way about the christmas cards. I'm not usually too fussed over them but now I feel like I'm going to end up like one of those mums handing chips though the getes to my kids.
It will be cards instead of chips though.

I think that card issue is a money grabbing one to be honest.
The newsletters are always on about Jesus and praying. Which is to be expected because of the type of school.
Banning Christmas....I just don't get it.Smart price rocks!0 -
So when the kids break up from school for the holidays they have to say to their classmates 'happy advent' instead of happy Christmas? Crazy!
I wouldn't be annoyed over, just wonder about the craziness of it all.
I don't understand why no cards, I remember when I was at school there were a couple of girls who had some different religion and they didn't celebrate Christmas and we were just told that they were not to be given cards.0
