Who's they?
I see many many people complaining about the 'banning' of Christmas and nobody actually trying to ban Christmas.
In fact everywhere I go the last few days...lights, trees, santas, cards, everywhere you look!
hear hear! I expect to see a lot more of this nonsense over the next couple of weeks, still, it's a good opportunity to trim my FB friends list! Like the time England shirts were "banned"....*rolls eyes*0 -
I think it's always best to ask the class teacher before taking what a primary aged child reports home as 100% fact, things can get muddled or they could misunderstand the meaning.

Its a catholic primary school. So I REALLY don't understand.

You sound like one of those "A la carte Catholics". Prepared to believe in the bits you want and then leave the bits you don't like back on the serving tray.
Being a baptized and confirmed Catholic (it's capital letters), I was taught in a Catholic primary school. They did this there then and that was the '70s.
The school is right. It's not Christmas until the 25th December. There are 12days of Christmas where there are various Holy days of Obligation which most people ignore after Midnight Mass.
Up until then it's Advent. It is now the season of Advent where we prepare for Christmas.
We are to contemplate the Birth of the Baby Jesus and his life of duty and sacrifice before he makes the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of mankind at Easter. Big whoop.
We fizzed with barely constrained excitement about the presents we were going to receive all the way up to the school break all the way pretending to the teachers and priests that it wasn't all about the Lego.
We learned hypocrisy at an early age.
The big finish was The Nativity. We had a big school post box that everyone had to post their cards into and there was a big presentation at the last assembly - and everyone quickly learned who the Johnny-No-Mates were and the parents sat at the back (on chairs!) whilst we sat on the floor on the front.
The school is being absolutely correct. It's the downside of picking a religious school. What did you expect? Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway... :huh:0 -
Banned Christmas!! They never did, did they?!!!!
Oh, my ..... (insert the name of your favoured deity here)0 -
Have you looked on the school website it may be on there. Tend to think there has been some mix up and kids taking something too literally!0

banning cards sounds sensible - buying cards for full classes is expensive and pointless, plus a big waste of paper. people inevitably end up sending the cheapest cards they can find (which makes sense when you're buying lots) which just end up in landfill in the most part (although hopefully more and more in recycling). a big class card with charitable donations sounds like a really good idea on a practical basis and on the basis that it teaches a little bit more about what Christmas should be about, rather than shameless commercialisation!
this all sounds like a different spin on something sensible. some discussion of advent over Christmas has been skewed and the idea of charity donations instead of cards has become paying for cards.
that all aside, if this is primary school, this is the kind of thing to communicate directly to parents rather than by word of mouth through children.... they should know that even with the best will in the world, they aren't the most reliable ways to transmit information!:happyhear0 -
Political correctness gone mad.
This country is not aimed at being a homestead for the original inhabitants these days. We are made to feel unwelcome. They should ban the word Diwali as well - But they won't!The opposite of what you know...is also true0 -
stupid why ban a word why should we change our beliefs and religious festivals but allow other such religions to keep theresReplies to posts are always welcome, If I have made a mistake in the post, I am human, tell me nicely and it will be corrected. If your reply cannot be nice, has an underlying issue, or you believe that you are God, please post in another forum. Thank you0

Hate to put a damper on all the mouth-foaming DailyMailism but have we established if this is actually true yet or has the wee one got the wrong end of the stick?0
