Next month is January, doesn't mean I'm gonna start worshipping Roman gods. Christmas has different meanings to different people. It's just a word.
You could start worshipping meI'd like that!

fwiw, what an excellent thing to do...to remember and learn about the meanings behind the names if you have ids in the house.
DH and I are from different cultural backgrounds and also have an interest in diferent ancient histories....we are very ''magpie''ish about what we celebrate and remember...there is usually something to commemorate to cheer a glum time. He (non Christian) loves Christmas and everything it stands for, ncluding the great hope of a messiah's birth, as much (well, more) than anyone I've met. He finds no difficulty celebrating the joy of another people.
We've been having a difficult few months, and I might suggest next year we have ''month'' celebrations.I know he'd love that

Its a cheery few days of light and bright colour in the middle of the darkest part of the year.
No reason for any gods or worship to be involved at all.
Lots of words eventually stop meaning what they started out to mean, look at the days and months for one, nobody is stopping you from celebrating the Christmas you believe in so why not leave people alone to celebrate what they want?
Spot on. The meaning of christmas to me is....some sparkly silliness in the middle of the bleak midwinter, and some time out from the everyday 9 to 5 to think of others and spend time with those we love.....and drink our own body weight in Baileys,natch...0 -

Did you spend ages looking at the hoardes of trollies, to see the parsnips and sprouts?
I do however see the eminantly sensible approach of not making a big deal of christmas until it is nearly upon us, otherwise you just end up with over-excited and cranky children, maybe the school is taking this approach and will 'do' Christmas in the last week or so of term rather than wasting the entire of December with giddiness. I am an atheist but my OH is christian, the kids have been christened (as it was so important to him and his family) but ironically I am the one who insists he takes them to church regularly to fulfil the promises he and the godparents made on their behalf, when they are old enough to make their own decision it will be just that. I am quite happy to celebrate the general family, eating, pressy thing but feel that a church school (as the op's is) and church going people should be making some acknowledgement towards what their belief system calls the true meaning of christmas and this includes the recognition that advent is the period of preparation that leads up to the christmas period.0 -

parsnips and sprouts are not 'christmas food', they are vegetables that are currently in season.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

He loves "the great hope of a messiah's birth", but doesn't actually believe in the messiah?! Does that make him hopeless...?0
