  • Looking at next week, I'm going to try for an NSD week. We have more than enough in the freezer, DH is working 3 evenings, and we are away at the weekend, so should be easy!

    We definitely have:

    Cottage pie
    Potato waffles
    Sausages
    Chips
    Beans
    Eggs
    Soup
    Fish pie mix
    Gammon

    I can do this!!

  • I can do this!!

    Yes, you can!!!
Mortgage at highest (April 2008): ~£195,000
    Mortgage-free: January 2021
Retired: June 2022 (186 months early!)
  • Looks like I won't be doing the Halifax shuffle after May:

In other changes from 1 May, Reward current account customers with fewer than two direct debits in place will be moved onto the bank's standard current account, which does not pay £5 per month.

I was looking at the 123 account as it looks like I could earn more than a fiver a month by having 2 direct debits.

  • I'll update properly later with my grocery spend but wanted to say quickly about the free Welch's grape juice as per the Freebies board. I printed my coupon last night for a free carton and it turns out it's a money maker! It's on offer in T for £1.30, but the coupon takes £2.59 off your bill, so I was paid £1.29 to buy the juice!

Has anyone ever looked at the Second Purse challenge? It has blown my mind! I just about understand it and might give it a go seeing as I've got a pretty good stockpile already thanks to the extreme couponing.

  • Mon: £27.57
    Tues: £1.40
    Weds: £3.51
    Thurs: £7.59
    Fri: £0.89
    Sat: NSD
    Sun: £4.37

Grand total for this week is £45.03, £24.97 underspend! There is definitely something in this batch cooking and meal planning lark!

I'll update my sig. I'm still hoping for a no spend week next week, fingers crossed!

Hi MFb40, I have checked up the 2nd purse challenge but I found it a bit complicated :o. Instead I am now saving a set amount in an offset savings pot, allowing me to build up cash for any bulk buys or bargainous shopping.

I have a relative though, who has operated a 2nd purse approach for over 50 years. She swears by it. There weren't the offers then as now, but she would save up for extra food for Christmas or birthdays, then with the arrival of freezers, she would batch cook. She really is an inspiration.

    Best wishes Tllly x

I won't even attempt it then :rotfl:. I'm guessing if you do a BOGOF etc you save the price of the free one to fund future purchases?
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

  • Yes, as I understand it, you have a 'float' that you add to every month with a fixed amount eg) £10. With that money you buy stuff on offer in bulk. You then have your normal grocery budget that you buy your shopping with, but instead of buying at the supermarket for onions in your case, every time you used an onion from your stock pile, you would replenish the 'bulk buy' fund with the going rate that you would have paid at the supermarket. So you are spending what you would have spent, but still have the money!
