Well, to add my twopence worth.......

In short: if you earn money, cash or not, little or not, you should declare it. The first £5k (can't remember exact figure) is tax free, to protect people like you who aren't earning much, so in all likeliness you will not be subject to tax on such a small amount, though I don't know anything about tax benefits.

I've read this post with interest, it might seem like people are bossing you about, but I think people just feel frustrated with the system, and are telling you what is legal and what is not. I agree with you that it is frustrating when you see people getting something for nothing without working for it. You are working for your money, but you are not paying into the system therefore SOME people on this board will feel as frustrated to read your post as you feel about those folks getting something for nothing.

Personally, I am self employed. Sometimes I only earn £15 for a job and yes, I declare that. All those little £15s add up. I know lots of people who do earn cash and don't declare it, and seem to get away with it, and yes it is frustrating, but it still isn't right. All it means is that those who are paying tax are effectively paying more tax than they would need to if everyone was honest. There is something so wrong about a system which makes people on low incomes think twice before they take on even a small amount of work, because if they lost their benefits they would be poorer than doing the work, and yet I don't blame them.

    Good luck

I couldn't agree more. Sorry I hope my post didn't come out as a rant, I certainly didn't mean it to.

    just a couple of things

you can find out the HMRC number by looking up Inland Revenue in the phone book.

you can ask them hypothetical questions like ....'i'm thinking of applying for a parttime job as as a delivery driver' etc without giving your name and asking them what hppens about tax / NI etc

be aware that your employer is probably not being strictly legal (although i dont know that) so you need to consider that aspect

you haven't said your full family financial situation but you can get an idea about the benefits/tax credits situation by looking at

    ok i phoned up

i will have to claim it and cos its so small it wont affect my tax credits

she said i should regester as self employed, this seems the best option as i wont have to go through the books of the take away.

just waiting now to see what my insurance says.

    would that tidy everything up??

ahh !!!!!! this is silly now lol

i cant register as self employed cos i will be working for someone, so i guess i will have to give it up.

i will refrain from ranting about this country cos you all know its !!!!!!.

  • I may be legally in the wrong with what I am about to say but I think you should just carry on and not declare it, mate. It's only a bit of pocket money and it's just not worth the hassle to declare it! So many undeserving sods get everything handed to them on a plate in this country! If I were you, I would just carry on with the job and not tell anyone.
