try https://www.entitledto.co.uk and enter all your details in there. Make this years figures include what you "may" earn (over estimate than under) and see what it suggests.

At least that way you will have some idea about how it will affect your tax credits. (If it does)

The law says you declare it.

I agree, lot of people take the chance, so it is up to you. As I am typing this I know ssoo many people living day to day like this and have been for years. One who does hairdressing at £65.00 cash in hand per day...... ummmmm

  • If you're getting tax credits and don't declare it you could be done for benefit fraud and lose you tax credits altogether, as well as facing have to pay back a huge overpayment.

Yes, the lady doing the ironing is supposed to tell the taxman. I have a tiny income that is way below my personal allowance, but I have informed the tax man. I just don't have to pay any tax on it. She is supposed to let NI know too, as she is officially self-employed.

Also, if she is on benefits, there may be problems there too.

Ok, so we can all see what you are saying above, but you DID ask the forum for their opinions, and their opinions is what you got!

The thread does show that many others are frustrated by the way the system works, and whilst many understand the temptation of working cash in hand, they also want to abide by the rules, however much we disagree with them.

As far as the car insurance goes though, this one is a genuine piece of good advice from whichever way you view it. If you get stopped, or if you did have a bump, it would end up costing you far more than you had earnt, and your insurance premiums could be increased for years to come, so in my opinion it simply isn't worth the risk. What if you had a minor bump but someone sued for whiplash etc? Or worse, if you had an accident and hurt yourself?

People here are only trying to help and if you raise an issue, be prepared for it to be commented on!!
