Dora - I hear your pain with public speaking. I tend to draw a mind map of what I want to say which helps. I always take a deep breath when I start and to relax me I always imagine what the audience would look like nude:eek: (not that I really want to know but it makes me smile and relaxes me).

Another good day at college today - my hospital appointment is being shifted, Peter is trying to get me a new appointment in the refraction clinic too before my spexs are sorted out. I must admit that there are a few people in class who have already started irritating the hell out of me. There is the more mature and overly negative woman and the ditzy Brazilian girl whom I am now starting to tune out every time she speaks - she is either too lazy to answer a question herself or she doesnt understand it, she always asks one of the lads to answer on her behalf. Her voice is starting to irritate me and this afternoon I felt like strangling her because she would not shut up! She positively screeched when she saw that it was raining - I couldn't have given a rat's bottom that it was raining, I was more interested in learning and participating in the lesson. Grump...sorry for the mini rant.

OOoh Horace - I an almost hear you stamp your feet in frustration. Time to start plunking on a bell-jar during these college sessions I think - for your own sanity of course.

DS1 is back from school - with a bruise on his ribs from kid who is an issue - and a story about how he was throwing stones in the playground.

So Teachers please - what should I do? I hate that DS1 is afraid, more than a little ticked off that nothing seems to happen to the nuisance other than "we will have a word". Should I be writing an official letter? Asking to see their anti-bullying policy, turfing up at playtime and flushing the kids head down the loo???? You know I am kidding about the last one- right?

What is the right thing to do in the state school? DS1 has never physically been in danger before.

Sorry to hear about DS1 MG. I would be inclined to write to the school about their anti-bullying policy, write to the governors and write to the local education section on the council. I would also be speaking to the police about DS1 being physically harmed at school. Having a word generally means that they won't do anything at all and is just a platitude to shut you up. If the bullying continues why not make the school famous and contact the local newspaper?

A bell jar is a good idea - the folks that irritate me can go and live under it and that way I can tune them out.

Did I say that I might be moving in 6 weeks as well? Mum told me last night - her daft solicitor initially said 3 months but I told her that he was having a laugh and that it should take 6 weeks at most..lo and behold he has since changed his mind. Now I need boxes and to sort stuff out. May ditch UW on the head as it is taking too long to switch..I may just stick with Scottish Power as I have never had a problem with them but at the moment I am trying to save money.

Not a teacher MG, but a bruise means that DS1 was struck or kicked quite hard. This is a no brainer, If the school wont deal with it in the strongest terms possible, then you should put it in the hands of the police. Some may think this is a little harsh, but I firmly believe that the little darling that did this will do it again, because the schools way of dealing with this is to coddle the perpetrators... Its assault, no other way to describe it, and it should be dealt with as such. The message that is being sent out to DS1 is that its ok for other kids to do this to him, (not by you MG), by the school who have ever such a politically correct way of dealing with bullying. Grrrrrrr it makes me so cross. Can you tell...? Hope DS1 is ok, xx

MG when ds2 was bullied in school, he came home one day with bruises around both his upper arms the school never did anything so we called the police and the boy was arrested.

Had a word with the "Community Bobby" - he's a family friend.

He says he will call the school tomorrow when he is on duty and let me know.

Also wanted to know which day is baking day so that he can pop in to take a statement. Cheeky Beggar :rotfl::rotfl:

Community Bobby/PCSO is definitely the way to go, schools are way too soft on bullying from what I've seen and children are getting more spiteful and violent.

Thanks for all the public speaking advice - mostly I am ok with big groups like that but will burn red in the face when in a small group of say 6 people, even ones I know really well and even blush when on the phone - think I am in fact mad (which won't be solved easily)

From teacher's perspective MG go in and see headteacher - it sounds like there have been ongoing issues with the stone thrower. Inform them of the situation, that he came home with a bruise, that you want to see their behaviour policy and want to know a) b) and c) from below.

Dd had a bruise from a friend's daughter the other week and we were in the next morning to see a)what had been done about it on the day b)whether the parents had been informed (according to dd's school policy they should and dh knows as he is parent governor) c)what was now going to happen as a result - what next steps for dd and the other girl too.

Tell them you also had a word with the community bobby while he was chatting to you yesterday (so it makes it sound more reasonable than "you went straight down to the cop shop and reported an assault") as you are concerned that this boy is consistently getting in trouble and that obviously throwing stones is very dangerous and needs taking seriously by the school - not only could he have someones eye out, split a head open he could also decide to start lobbing them over the wall at passing cars etc.

Our hands are tied a lot in terms of what we can do in schools i.e. no more cane/lines or decapitating! but there should be robust systems in place to deal with any incidents that occur.
