MSE News: Orange to raise monthly mobile costs

Am waiting to see what happens about renewals with loyalty discounts. I am halfway thorugh my 24 month contract which I renewed when I was about to cancel the contract to move to vodafone. The loyalty team representative sold me on a great 24 month contract by stating we will discount your monthly line rental to cost you £20 per month.
I would expect that if they were to raise my price by £1.28 they should be raising my discount by £1.28(it is a £30 per month contract) otherwise it would be a mis-sell as I took a 24 month contract because I was clearly told it would cost me £20 per month after discounts.
I recently received a text stating that the price would rise by 4.34 from February 2012. Will wait 2 weeks and then call them up to see what their stand is. otherwise I guess I would have to write in and complaint which should allow me to cancel the contract or them raise theloyalty discount. either which way they have lost my loyalty!!!. and 3 contracts when they come to an end in 6 months and 12 months time.
Orange shoudl realise by doing what they are doing they may make £1.28 per month or £15.36 per year on a £30 pm contract but they are surely going to lose customers losing a £360( in my case £240) per year business and that is excluding the extra call charges and roaming charges they make every month!!!
its the principle that matters. Good riddance to Orange...I think they should rebrand from "Everything Everywhere" to "Nothing Nowhere" thats what they are going towards "Nowhere":D:D:D:beer::beer::beer:0 -
Is this amongst the first cracks over the price hike?

did see that although its just a way to get more money in, in the end your left with an even higher monthly tarrif
i would never even concider that option and anyone who does must be crazy0 -
Interesting to see the business reasons for launching at the same time as the Price Hike.... maybe get people over to new tariffs and that they know about price increase terms so UTCCR doesn't apply.0

For "high value customers" read "high spending customers" that only ever want the latest status symbol phone and thus are not price sensitive and are happy to stump up the cost of paying off the contract early with a 33% discount on the remaining line rental to get that just-released phone.
My reading of OFCOMs latest reported comments linked above is that they haven't come off the fence and have no real intention of doing so (probably because they believe that Orange legal advice is probably right and they would lose any case that went to court following their investigation finding against the price rise).
Consumer pressure on Orange is the only way to hit them where it hurts for taking this calculated decision to rely on small print terms - I see no reason to reward them by staying with Orange any longer than you must do to honour the contract and I still believe that they will regret taking this decision to shaft existing customers.0 -
mine says =
Panther 35 Websave (24mth), 26 months ( strange !!!! )
your contract ends:
24/02/2013
next upgrade date:
26/11/2012
thats strange mate as mine looks ok, but i would double check & i am now thinkin g i would like to end my contact asap & move over to 02 on sime free contact. as this is not fair what orange are doing & how they are doing this pay rise of theres.
so has anyone really ended or came out of the contact with out paying a fee, as i guess i would pay a lot to end my contact.
& i do use most of my allowance so i would not down grade also, so how should i go about trying to end my contact as i have looked on here but i would like some help on how to write or say it to orange right.

I'm pleased for you. Care to share what the new plans are? The cynic in me thinks that rather than you pay them more, they're now giving you less. However, it's a great saving for you when you need it.
the 2 at £15.50 are for 100 minutes, unlimited texts and 100 mb data
£10.50 plan is for 100 minutes and unlimited texts.
We were on plans that far exceeded our usage (600 mins and 750mb) and the "free" gifts offered did influence our choosing.
These new plans are better for us by far. We rarely use more than 30 minutes a month......saving calls to family and friends for the evenings when its free on the landline.
My son has no need for any data allowance....he doesn't have that capability on his phone anyway.
Yes we are getting less, but it wont affect us and i'm saving around £50 a month now.
I'm happy with what I've got, and the service I received0 -

..in which case, once you've got through these newer contracts, please never be fooled by "free" gifts again. 30mins/30texts/30MB is available on 30-day SIM only for £1.00 per month. 100mins/unlimited texts/100MB is available for £5.00 per month. And if you ever face a price rise you don't like, you never need to get in a huff, you just up and walk. Easy.0 -
there is an interesting discussion of this matter on money box on radio 4
it was the 3/12/11 episode about 17 minutes in
in the light of this I am proposing to send this to Orange - if you like the idea why not send a similar letter?
Dear Sir
I wish to complain in the strongest terms about the price rise that you are proposing to add to my contract with you.
I am writing to say that I am not authorising you to collect the extra amount by direct debit from my bank account. You may continue to collect the normal amount.
I have discovered that you may not raise my contract price if it causes me material detriment. This term is a legal one and has to be established for each account holder. I believe that this price rise is causing me material detriment.
I am therefore writing to you to state that we are in dispute over your price rise and look forward to a letter responding to this one explaining the procedure you are putting in place for establishing to our mutual satisfaction that this price rise will not cause me material detriment.
Yours Sincerely0 -
