Thanks a million for your article on MEAF's - we contacted RBS by letter (using your template) and then followed it up 2 weeks later with a phone call after they charged us a £225 MEAF (they call it a 'Sealing Fee') when we closed our mortgage with them a year ago.
They sent us a letter this week to say they are refunding £150 as a gesture of goodwill!
Many thanks, Martin!

Just to say thanks to Martn for this.
Over my last 3 mortgages i've managed to get £315 back so far. £40 was interest alone!
This site provides a fantastic services
Thanks again0 -
I wrote my origional letter on 19th March, got a reply dated 21st March today (23rd March) with a cheque attached for the £90 difference!!
They haven't coughed up for the interest as they feel that as they dealt with my complaint so speedily, they do not feel that I was illegally deprived of the money.
Ask me this...Am I bovverred!!!
£90 in the bank when I didn't even know I deserved it!! (That equates to 45 pints of Tetley Smooth)
Keep up the good work Martin, one of the 45 pints has your name on it!!:money:0 -

Having paid £295 to Alliance & Leicester last Sept to redeem my 20 year old mortgage I sent off your template letter 2 weeks ago. I'm pleased to say that I received a cheque for £287.50 today. Thanks Martin for the advice.
It proves you have nothing to lose by sending out that letter. Everyone should apply.:T0 -
I got mine back this week after one phone call.
Changed mortgages from Scottish Widows last year to a better one. I phoned them up to ask them for the money back, they looked at the account and then I got a check for the £95 difference through the post.
Easy peasy and only took a week.
Thanks Martin, you're a star!0 -
Redeemed with Abbey last August, charged £225. Rang and asked for form which came within a week. Returned form and recived cheque for £160 within another week. This meant that my fee on my mortgage taken out in Feb 2000 was £65. I thought it was going to be £990

I wrote very basic letters to both Portman and Alliance and Leicester a few weeks ago as a stab in the dark as I did not even have any of the information about the mortgage accounts just that i had remortgaged with them both within the past five years! I then received a letter from both of them telling me that they were looking into the problem and would be in touch. Yesterday I received a cheque for £2.50 :rotfl: from the Portman and a copy of my original agreement. Am now waiting for the one from A&L to come. Well! being total DFW now, I banked the cheque the very same day:DProud to have dealt with my debts. Nerd number 288:j Debt free date Dec 07 :EasterBun

Thanks for your advice, a quick 'phone call to my last lender (Halifax) resulted in contact with a clear ansaphone system " If you are claiming being overcharged" (something to that effect), press button 2, seconds later I was actually talking with someone! Within minutes he had identified that I had indeed been overcharged and promised to put a cheque for £125 in the post! RESULT!!!
I am quite impressed with your weekly email and the reaction from Halifax, well done you! and well done Halifax!!0
