Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

I moved mortgage from Lloyds TSB last September and found it odd at the time that I had not received a final statement detailing what charges had been made (the cynical amongst us may think banks would deliberately not send this information!). After a 2 minute phone call today, I found I had actually been charged an exit fee of £225, when I should have been charged £100. I have now been assured a refund of £125 plus interest is on its way.
Great site Martin :T0 -
Hi,
Just got £160.00 from ABBEY.
No questions. just returned the form and got back £160.00 of the £225.00 they charged me last year. Mortgage was taken out 9 years ago.
Excellent freebie.

Hi,
Just wanted to share my success with Halifax. Using telephone number MSE provided, I quoted my account details, and hey presto a cheque for the difference between fee quoted and actual fee charged arrived approx. one week later. I am very pleased to be £60 better off - thanks very much! I will have to report back with regards to Portman, as I was advised to send my request/complaint to them.0 -
Part success....
Took out mortgage and further loan with Lloyds TSB Dec 2001 with £50 exit fee - Offer was amended at last minute to 'further loan' offer not being made until 30 days after being in flat. There was no mention of exit fee in offer but within paperwork there was a list of charges. There was no new list in with further loan offer.
I wrote requesting difference of £130 as exit fee charged Aug '04 was £180. They have promised refund of £104.27 incl interest stating the difference was £90 compared to last contract signed. As far as im concerned, it was part of the orignal loan request and has original loan date on offer therefore further refund due.
I have written letter requesting this, enclosing copies of my paperwork, and a breakdown of the charge if not prepared to do so. Fingers Crossed!!!! but still better off!0 -
Awesome! I made a three minute phonecall to RBOS regarding a mortgage I had with them 4 years ago and got a £160 refund!
Portman seemed annoyed that I had contacted them and requested a letter (now sent) and Brittania will reply within 5 days.
Martin is the man!!
Thankyou thankyou thankyou
Just interested to know if you have had any response from Portman? I too contacted them and felt they were annoyed at me. I was told that I should write in but they couldn't comment on if/when a response would materialise!!0 -
Hi
I took your advice and rang B&B re mortgage exit fees when I remortgaged in September to another lender. I was able to find my original contract from 1998 stating fees of £75 but I was charged £235.
I rang them to query this and was told I must put it in writing.
I have today received a letter from them offering me £160.00 back as a gesture of goodwill!
What a result.
Thanks Martin:rotfl:0 -
Hi
After reading the article on unfair sealing fees. I checked my old mortgage redemption statment with the Royal bank of scotland. And it had a sealing fee of £225. When looking at the article i should have only have been charged £75. I got on the phone to them and complained but to no avail. So i took it a step further and wrote them a letter of complaint. Today i recieved a letter from the RBS apologising and they have sent £150 to my bank account. result....

I phoned Barclays, gave them the mortgage account number, and confirmed my personal details. They immediately said the sum of £110 would be refunded to my bank account. I checked my bank account a couple of days later and the payment was there. I passed on the tip to a friend at work who had also changed mortgage lender recently. Same thing - great success. Thank you.0

I had been with the Alliance and Leicester from 1980 to 2006 (loyalty or what?). Last summer I switched building societies and got hit with the £295 charge. I sent off a letter based on Martin's template (cheers marting  ) and got a reply from A&L extract below:
"Having received our records I can see that you agreed to a new mortgage product with us after this charge was increased in August 2004....this would have been detailed in the leaflet that was included with the Annual Mortgage Statement you received each year since then. In the circumstances I do not feel that this has been unfairly applied and, therefore, I cannot agree to refund any part of this to you."
OK I did from time to time look for deals with A&L but I was never aware that by doing so I was agreeing to the £295 charge.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Have just had letter from Northern Rock offering me £110. I used your template and asked for £206 which included interest. They tell me i am entitled to £250 - £140 (not the £75 i quoted) and didnt include the interest. Think i will accept as £110 as better in my pocket than theirs and never expected to get it. Thanks Martin!!!0
