Swapped to the Derbyshire last year. Realised I had paid an exit fee when I left Nationwide at that time so I wrote to Nationwide last week and asked for £90 refund. Cheque arrived today. No hassle, other than writing the letter and I used Martin's template for that. Thanks Martin.
  • Can anyone give me help on this, I have just successfully reclaimed the admin fee on my mortgage for when i repaid it. I previously had a mortgage through one of the 'helpfull!! consolidate your debts companies'. Can i reclaim charges from them even though they are not a bank/ building society?. Fantastic

Help! we have just received our letter back from Bank of Ireland with an offer of £50, this is for the difference of what they charged us which was £195 and what they should have charged us £145, they say that this is a gesture of goodwill and that we need to sign a sheet giving confidentiality too. first off should we accept this £50, or is it worthwhile trying to claim the full amount? and secondly should we sign this confidentiality agreement, i've not read anyone else having to do this. please help, i've never done anything like this before and would love some advice. thanks
  • I reported a few days ago that the Woolwich had agreed to refund my MEAF with no quibbles whatsoever. I had sent them a letter using the template this site supplied but had received no response from that so I looked again at this site and found the telephone number of the dedicated hotline. A short phone call with no hassles promised me a refund and I am delighted to report that £235.56 arrived in my bank account yesterday (£225 refund and the rest in interest):T . Many thanks Martin, you're a STAR.

I contacted West Bromwich beginning of February and was asked to write in, which i did. They wrote back to me advising that a decision would be made in next 28 day days.

I followed up today (almost 28 days later) and was advised that they sent a letter to me today advising that a decision had been made and that they would be in touch in another 28 days !! mmm !

will let you know what the outcome is in ANOTHER 28 days then  !

A call to the Woolwich on the dedicated number and without knowing the details of my (two) mortgages I just gave my details and they confirmed £190 waiting for me, just asked for my bank details.

It just seemed too easy, a freephone number, a nice chap all to pleased to give me my cash; should I have pushed for the whole amount of fees paid back?

Just received a letter from Cheltenham and Gloucester confirming that they will be sending me a refund of approx £150 - they have also added on interest from the date my mortgage account was closed. Only sent the letter on 1st March, so am delighted with their quick response.

    Thanks for your advice.

Just because a lender has been efficient in giving you the refund the FSA have specified doesn't mean you should ask for more! Don't be so greedy.

Having struggled through remortgaging twice with them, it is the first time I have seen any efficiency! ;) I wondered if they were pleased that I was only asking for the difference rather than what they believe I am entitled to.

Martin's page on the subject suggests the possibility of getting the whole charge back, plus the fees for arranging a mortgage and ending it could be considered greedy on the bank's part...

  • Leeds Builiding Society have finally paid up, £105, which was £35 more than I expected! They say in their letter,
'...the Society has determined that it will adopt a policy of charging the exit fee which applied at the commencement of a mortgage and has notified the FSA accordingly.'
