Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

  • I rang the Halifax yesterday to enquire if I was due any money back, after swapping lenders 3 years ago. The guy on the phone was very helpful and after giving him my old mortgage account number, told me I was owed £40 back. Not as much as some are owed but I couldn't believe how easy it was. Whilst on the phone I mentioned the bank charge claims and asked if it was as easy to claim them back (feeling cheeky). He put me through to banking who offered to send me six years statements for £5 and said I'd have them in the next couple of weeks....Fingers crossed for success here too.

Hi Smanfer71 (thread post page 10)
I too had a mortgage with Mortgage Express (Aug 2003 to Aug 2005)
I have their tariff charges leaflets for 2004 onwards and know that I was charged in 2005 £175 MEAF and I also believe £60 "Request to Inspect Mortgage Documentation" fee. I looked everywhere but couldn't find the Tariff charges leaflet for 2003. Do you happen to still have a copy? I know that the MEAF in 2004 was £140 but not sure if it was even lower than that back in 2003. (I Rang Mortgage Express today and am told it was still £140 - but I would like 'independant' verification).

I am going to send off a letter today following Martin's template but I also intend to claim interest (they had and deprived me of what was rightfully mine so I believe interest would be due despite whether or not the FSA has been silent on this point) the rate I am quoting is 8% p.a. based upon the judgment rate for court actions and in case any others are interested I am using the wording
".....together with interest from ......to date (... months) at the rate of 8% per annum in accordance with S.69 of the County Courts Act 1984 and which we calculate equates to £.... making the grand total ......"

I will let you know how I get on. What did you decide to do in the end about interest?

Incidentally in case it assists anyone else the address to write to for Mortgage Express is:-
    Customer Relations H55
    PO Box 88
    Croft Road
    Crossflatts
    Bingley
    W. Yorks
    BD16 2BR

(they don't seem to be dealing with this matter on the telephone as some other mortgage co's appear to be doing)

    Good luck to all.

I am in total agreement with you. This is not rocket science to be claiming intrest and I am amazed and really disappointed that members are happy just to claim the overpayment. It seems that a refund payment of £100 is better
than £125.The banks etc aren't giving you the real deal.Make sure you get it as they are quick to charge a fee and intrest if you don't pay on time or go into the red.
  • Hi

i ended my Abbey mortgage in November 2006 after 8 years and was charged an exit fee of £225, im so glad i looked on this site to know how to claim. Success with Nationwide for me this morning - a full refund for the £90 mortgage exit fee. The letter stated they felt it was a fair charge, but because I had pointed out that it was nowhere in my original paperwork they have agreed a full refund.

Thank you so much Martin, will help towards our horrendous gas bill (but that's a whole new thread)!:rotfl: :rotfl:

Hi, I sent a letter to Halifax on saturday 24th Feb and received a reply yesterday. We paid our mortgage off in November and our original mortgage contract stated £40.00 admin fees and £15 deeds despatch fee. They have offered to pay £135 back but no mention of the deeds fee which was £50 !!
Still owt's better than nowt. Thank you Halifax (and Martin).

I rang the Woolwich yesterday on the dedicated number as mentioned previously (08000 234180). I didn't have any details of my old account number (mortgage moved in Nov 05) and I had no idea what I did/should have paid but they just did if using my name and old address - they asked why I was ringing - said I wanted to enquire what fees I had paid. The guy said I paid £195, should have been £95 and therefore they would refund me £105.31 (inc the interest) without me actually even asking. Said it would be transferred to bank within 10 days. Thanks MSE!

Just received a cheque from the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society for £105.00. NPBS had stalled me a few weeks ago, telling me i had to wait until the review period ended on 28/02/07, but has now decided to refund those affected. To be fair to NPBS the cheque is dated 01/03/07. Many Thanks.

What were you originally quoted by the Woolwich for the redeption fee. I redeemed in Nov 2003 and paid £150, now I cannot find the original papers, so don't know what I was originally told the fee was going to be....
    Thanks
    Alan
