Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

Hi Smanfer71 (thread post page 10)
I too had a mortgage with Mortgage Express (Aug 2003 to Aug 2005)
I have their tariff charges leaflets for 2004 onwards and know that I was charged in 2005 £175 MEAF and I also believe £60 "Request to Inspect Mortgage Documentation" fee. I looked everywhere but couldn't find the Tariff charges leaflet for 2003. Do you happen to still have a copy? I know that the MEAF in 2004 was £140 but not sure if it was even lower than that back in 2003. (I Rang Mortgage Express today and am told it was still £140 - but I would like 'independant' verification).
I am going to send off a letter today following Martin's template but I also intend to claim interest (they had and deprived me of what was rightfully mine so I believe interest would be due despite whether or not the FSA has been silent on this point) the rate I am quoting is 8% p.a. based upon the judgment rate for court actions and in case any others are interested I am using the wording
".....together with interest from ......to date (... months) at the rate of 8% per annum in accordance with S.69 of the County Courts Act 1984 and which we calculate equates to £.... making the grand total ......"
I will let you know how I get on. What did you decide to do in the end about interest?
Incidentally in case it assists anyone else the address to write to for Mortgage Express is:-
Customer Relations H55
PO Box 88
Croft Road
Crossflatts
Bingley
W. Yorks
BD16 2BR
(they don't seem to be dealing with this matter on the telephone as some other mortgage co's appear to be doing)
Good luck to all.0 -
Woolwich Have made it easy to reclaim. All done over the telephone. Took 5 minutes I am very happy. The telephone number is 08000 234180.0

I didn't think we'd be due any fee refunds, but after seeing Martin on TV yesterday talking about mortgage lenders overcharing people who pay off their mortgages, I decided to check if we had ever been charged a redemption fee.
It turned out that the Halifax had charged us £75 and the Woolwich had charged us £275. After making 2 calls to the 2 lenders we've been with over the last 5 years I am now awaiting a £225 refund! Both companies just needed my mortgage account number and personal details and then knew exactly how much they owed me within minutes!
The Halifax even said 'lets see how much we owe you then'!!
I asked whether they would be contacting people they owed money to and they said not, that people have to contact them. Well worth the phone call and time digging out the paperwork!0 -
Hi,I had a mortgage with Bristol&West(1997-2003)and wrote to them regarding MEAF and received this reply which I don`t understand,
`You have requested a refund of £150.00,the redemption Administration Fee that was charged by Bristol&West,less£35.00representing what you consider to be the true cost involved.
After reviewing our records I note that you were charged a fee of £150 to redeem your mortgage on 11th September 2003.This was a standard fee that was charged to all our customers and which was inline with market practice at the time.Under the terms prevailing at the time of completion of your mortgage in June 1997,you would have been charged £87.50 plus 10 days interest, atotal amount of £158.50.You have therefore benefited from the amendment to our fees over the period of your mortgage`
Can anyone explain this to me or am I being really thick!!
P.S Coventry Building Society have sent a cheque for £10 and Halifax for £100
Any help appreciated.0 -
I recently approached NR for a refund using the template from this site. At first they offered me a laughable £15 so I replied and refused to settle. They have now offered me the full £175. Success!
The advice on this site was extremely helpful - thank you! My advice is not to accept the first settlement - keep going... don't let the banks win!0 -

Seems abbey are changing their process day to day. I called the number above and they told me to call 0845 6000346 (mortgage centre). Press option 7 for 'other' and they want me to fill out a form and send it back to them. I guess you got lucky Redmikee with them sorting out for you over the phone!0 -
Paid off my Woolwich mortgage on 12/02/07 and paid £275 redemption fee.
Rang them today and found that they had already paid £275.38 into my account
on 20/02/07 ; apparently they are doing this on fees payed since 01/02/07.
keep up the good work.0 -
I am so happy we got £185 refund for our exit fees. I should have demanded the interest too , mind you I never though of that. When I first rung them up the bloke saied we were overcharged by £70. Sent a letter with Martins template got refund of £185 in 2 days! Fantastic for sombody who doesn`t earn anything.

Thanks for all the advice. Just spoken to Yorkshire Building Society about a mortgage I had from 2002 to 2005. Seems I was charged £100 more than the discharge fees quoted when I took the mortgage out and I'll get a cheque in 28 days0

Bottom is a cut & paste of my first post.
But updated, just received a cheque from those nice people at Nat West who 'have reviewed their charges' and refunded me £140.00 along with the £100 from A & L.
Have sent another letter to A & L as detailed below and will keep you updated.
Cheers Martin & the MSE team
Used the letter, the fee was £65 when I took the mortgage out, it had risen to £295 when I swapped, they have just sent me a cheque for £100 and I am just about to ask for more !!! Used another site with RPI history and with inflation the £65 would have risen to £90, so am asking for another £95,
After all i'm not greedy !!!
P.S. Are mortgage arrangment fees being challenged because the name is a mis-noma it doesn't cost £595 to set up a mortgage????0
