  • My 1st post on the site. I had 4 Buy to Let mortgages (with Mortgage Express part of Bradford & Bingley) which I remortgaged a couple of years ago. One phone call today to their normal Helpline and very helpful man checked and advised I had been over charged £35 on 3 of the 4 mortgages when they were redeemed. He has arranged for me to be sent a cheque for £105 within next 21 days. Not bad for a 5 minute phone call. Thanks Martin!

You are lucky as buy to let mortgages are unregulated and there was no requirement for them to do that.

  • I recently visited this website for the first time and although i was aware that people had been reclaiming exit fees I had already thrown all my paper work away, so thought I would not be able to do the same.

However, after reading Martin's article which said you just need to give the basic details and ask, i sent a letter to Alliance & Leicester saying I had read an article which suggested they may have unfairly charged me. I gave them the property details and the dates of purchase and sale which i got from Rightmove as i could not remember them. I got a letter back a week later with a cheque for £220!!! No quibbling, no fuss, just a cheque for a letter which took 5 minutes.

I have also recently signed up to one of the cash back sites recommended on here and have just earned over £100 for a few electrical purchases, a credit card application and a National trust membership, all of which I would have done anyway.

Although a little sad I now wait with anticipation for the next newsletter to see where I can get freebies, cheap deals and save money.

    nice one Martin.

  • Just got a cheque for £255 from Alliance & Leicester! I got a standard 'fob off' reply to my first complaint that tried to suggest I had signed up to the new fees when I switched mortgages. Luckily I still had the original terms and conditions and there was no mention of an exit fee - let alone an inflated one. So I perservered, and now have the payoff.
  • Thanks Martin,

Decided to start the New Year by reclaiming our Mortgage Exit Admin Fee.

Checked paperwork and found info that looked like we could be due money back, but didn't really need this, only our mortgage roll number, the Halifax took it from there.

Had a mortgage run 199?-2003, began with £40 MEAF and was charged £75 at the end - CREDIT OF £35!!

Another 2003-2005, began with £75 and charged £175 at end - CREDIT OF £100!!!

Tried best to get interest back from Halifax, but they weren't having it.
Still £135.00 isn't bad for a 10 minute phone call!!!!!

    HAPPY NEW YEAR

    Success!
Northern Rock £75 cheque now cashed which was the difference between what the contract stated and what I was charged.

Awaiting response from Abbey after they sent me the forms to fill in.

Also waiting for a PPI loan response from Lloyds TSB who sold me PPI loan insurance when I was a student (technically unemployed).

    Thanks Martin.

  • Got £75 back from Britannia :j

When we moved house in 2006, they charged us a redemption fee of £75. Britannia admitted two mistakes in the letter with the cheque:
    1) that the redemption fee was actually only £50 at the time
    2) that we shouldn't have paid a redemption fee anyway, as we took out a new mortgage with Britannia at the same time

Result! How do they get away with this in the first place, how many people have been unfairly charged like this and will never know?
  • phoned Halifax on no. given on this site, when I had given all the details was told we had been charged correct amount, but they would still check into it and write to us with details-had letter 3 days later still saying we had been charged correctly, but as 'a sign of goodwill' and without admitting any liability offering us a refund of £135 of the £175 we had originally paid-great result.
  • Phone Halifax this morning after seeing it pays to watch last night and i am getting £25 back that we were over charged only took about 5 mins and thats was because she needed to double check our details as i am married now and the mortgage was taken out over 6 years ago. £25 is better than nothing so i am happy.
    Still Trying :o
